We still have a great deal of evidence today about the ecclesiastical and diplomatic career of Don Paolo di Marco, abbot and tenorista at Florence in the early fifteenth century. But we also owe him a number of allegorical madrigals which are perhaps the most innovative, and certainly the most virtuosic of this period. Apparently innocent bucolic or mythological texts conceal philosophical intrigues, political ideas and moral precepts. Their poetry and music still speak intensely to us in the twenty-first century.

Schubert set the poetry of over 115 writers to music. He selected poems from classical Greece, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, from eighteenth-century German authors, early Romantics, Biedermeier poets, and Heine. The Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition presents all Schubert’s Lieder, over 700 songs, grouped according to the poets who inspired him. Thanks to the Bärenreiter’s Neue Schubert-Ausgabe (New Schubert Edition), Tübingen, which uses primary sources, the performers have been able to benefit from the most recent research of the editorial team.

There is no shortage of recordings of Manuel de Falla's El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) and El amor brujo (Love, the Wizard), with more on the way, thanks to the centenary of the former in 2019. Even casual listeners may reflect that this delightful work has never, despite plenty of changes in taste in music of the interwar period, fallen out of style. It was on the cutting edge when it was premiered, and yet its fusion of flamenco influences with growing French neoclassicism is irresistible for general symphonic audiences.

Recorded January 21, 1981. Oklahoma-born John ‘Moon’ Martin is an American singer-songwriter whose songs were picked up and turned into hits by others. He was an underrated performer and perennially popular in Europe, having first toured there in late 1979. In the USA he opened for Cheap Trick, Rockpile and Joe Jackson. The name ‘Moon’ was added to distinguish him from Brit songsmith John Martyn, and it also recognises his frequent use of lunar-related imagery in lyrics. He was described by author Johnny Rogan as ‘a cross between Buddy Holly, Warren Zevon and John Denver’. His late 60s session career as a ‘guitarist-for-hire’ saw him backing Del Shannon, Jackie DeShannon, Gram Parsons and Linda Ronstadt. He wrote much of ‘Mama’ Michelle Phillips’ debut solo album, ‘Victim Of Romance’ (1977). His 70s band Southwind shared stages with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. He also found fame in the New Wave era, when he was backed by musicians from Blondie and was produced by Jack Nitzsche (whom he shared with Mink DeVille - hence the latter artist’s covers of ‘Rolene’ and ‘Cadillac Walk’).

Three CDs. 72-track set containing four hours of both groove-laden and downright rocking music from the (mostly London) Pub Rock scene's heyday of the mid 70s through to the early 80s. Also features a sizeable collection of tracks making their CD debut - with some not being heard at all since back in the day! Every track expertly and lovingly remastered by renowned studio wizard Tim Turan. They've never sounded as good. Satisfaction guaranteed! With an extravagant booklet containing a fully illustrated track-by-track annotation and overview by Simon Matthews, author of Before It Went Rotten: The Music That Rocked London's Pubs. In some respects, a lavish follow-up to Grapefruit's highly successful 2019 'Surrender To The Rhythm' set which highlighted Pub Rock's pioneers. 'Time! Gentlemen!' features a selection of cuts from many of the usual suspects of the genre such as Brinsley Schwarz, Dr. Feelgood, Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers and Kokomo, but excitingly, goes beyond the usual fare by including some of their lesser-known gems. Not only a virtual treasure trove of great 70s rock, the set also covers the scene's 'new' talent, many of which managed to have big hit singles in the latter part of the 70s, such as Elvis Costello, Squeeze, Nick Lowe and The Stranglers - to name but a few! In covering Pub Rock from the mid-70s onwards, other musical styles also start to exert their influence on the acts featured, so there's also evidence of punk, new wave, the mod revival and even a little reggae in addition to huge helpings of straight-ahead classic rock, good old rock 'n' roll, rollicking RnB - and a dash of Brit soulfulness, of course.

British crossover jazz, funk, and pop outfit Shakatak are a sophisticated ensemble who have enjoyed a long career. With a sound steeped in contemporary jazz and R&B, they found success with both instrumental albums and pop vocal productions. Formed in London in 1980, Shakatak originally featured keyboardists Bill Sharpe and Nigel Wright, guitarist Keith Winter, bassist Steve Underwood, and drummer Roger Odell. The group quickly scored an underground hit with its debut single "Steppin'." The following year, they cracked the British Top 50 with the singles "Livin' in the UK" and "Brazilian Dawn," both of which were included on their debut album, Drivin' Hard.

Fifth, is the fifth studio album by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1972. In the US the album was identified on cover and label by number (5). Fifth was the first Soft Machine album recorded after the departure of original drummer Robert Wyatt and continued the band's progression away from their original blend of psychedelic and progressive rock towards jazz fusion. Wyatt's replacement was Phil Howard, who contributed to the 1971 sessions that comprise side one, after which he left and was replaced by John Marshall for the 1972 sessions that comprise side two. Future member Roy Babbington worked on the album as a session musician, playing double bass on all the tracks on side two.

Having made several changes in their business and musical efforts in 1972, Grand Funk Railroad made even more extensive ones in 1973, beginning with their name, which was officially truncated to "Grand Funk." And keyboardist Craig Frost, credited as a sideman on Phoenix, the previous album, was now a full-fledged bandmember, filling out the musical arrangements. The most notable change, however, came with the hiring of Todd Rundgren to produce the band's eighth album. Rundgren, a pop/rock artist in his own right, was also known for his producing abilities, and he gave Grand Funk exactly what they were looking for: We're an American Band sounded nothing like its muddy, plodding predecessors.

In the Land of Grey and Pink is considered by many to be a pinnacle release from Caravan. The album contains an undeniable and decidedly European sense of humor and charm. In addition, this would mark the end of the band's premiere lineup. Co-founder David Sinclair would leave Caravan to form Matching Mole with Soft Machine drummer and vocalist Robert Wyatt in August of 1971. As a group effort, In the Land of Grey and Pink displays all the ethereal brilliance Caravan created on their previous pair of 12" outings.

There has never been a better box set than the Faces' Five Guys Walk into a Bar…. There has never been a box that captures an artist so perfectly, nor has a box set taken greater advantage of unreleased and rare material, to the point where it seems as essential and vital as the released recordings. Simply put, there's never been a box set as necessary as this, since it tells the band's entire tale and explains exactly what the fuss is all about. Unfortunately, some explanations are in order, since the Faces never made it big, resigned to cult status in America and Britain alike. Nevertheless, if you love rock & roll with an all-consuming passion, you may consider the Faces the greatest rock & roll band ever.

The song was written by Boone and Rod McQueen and sold over two million copies worldwide. It peaked at number 15 on The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the summer of 1972, having already reached number 21 on the UK Singles Chart earlier that same year. In 1972, Boone was the recipient of the "Most Likeable Singer" award from Rolling Stone magazine.

The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal…

Triumvirat's 1972 debut Mediterranean Tales was a strong precursor of things to come for this German progressive rock band who were heavily inspired by The Nice and ELP. While perhaps not as polished as later efforts, this first effort is a keyboard lover's dream, with Jurgen Fritz' Hammond, Moog, electric piano, various synths and grand piano out in full force throughout.
The band manages to blow their load right off the bat with the near 17-minute epic "Across the Waters", a true delight for all who love the bombastic nature of Keith Emerson and ELP. "Eleven Kids" is a more laid back bluesy number with Fritz and his Hammond organ providing center stage…
