After cofounding the pop-funk group Was (Not Was) with David Weiss (a.k.a. David Was) at the beginning of the '80s, Don Fagenson (a.k.a. Don Was) embarked on a rich and eclectic career as a producer—working with the likes of Brian Wilson, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Wayne Shorter. Even though his role as president and artistic director of the legendary jazz label Blue Note has kept him busy for nearly fifteen years, Don Was has never completely set aside his life as a musician, often picking up the bass again—whether as part of the trio Wolf Bros. or alongside Bob Dylan. It is this more personal side that Don Was has chosen to highlight with both mastery and humility, by releasing Groove in the Face of Adversity, his very first record under his own name.

German singer Anna-Maria Zimmermann was born in Gütersloh on December 14, 1988. At the age of five, she took part in the Mini Playback Show, where she performed Stefanie Hertel's song "Oma, Du Verstehst Mich Nich." In 2006, she became a contestant in the third season of the casting show Deutschland Sucht den Superstar, but only managed to make sixth place. She released her debut single, "Der Erste Kuss" (a collaboration with the band Jojos), in 2007 and signed with Universal one year later. Her second single, "Wer Ist Dieser DJ?," charted at number 66. Signing with EMI in 2009, she released a few more singles, including "1000 Träume Weit (Tornerò)," which reached number 68 in the German charts, and the Milva cover "Hurra Wir Leben Noch," which reached number 79.

Swiss jazz pianist Colin Vallon makes modern creative jazz with plenty of atmosphere, a post-bop sense of improvisation, and a completely fresh take on rhythmic interplay. Born in Lausanne in 1980, Vallon studied jazz privately before enrolling in the Swiss Jazz School at age 18. By the late '90s, he was performing regularly with his own trio in Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe. He released his debut solo album, Les Ombres, on Unit in 2004. His sophomore effort, Ailleurs, appeared in 2007 on Hatology. As Vallon's profile grew, he garnered several awards including the Fridl-Wald Foundation Prize, and took third place in the Montreux International Jazz Piano Solo Competition. In 2008 he received the Nico Kaufmann Foundation Prize and in 2009 he won the Pro Helvetia high-priority jazz promotion. When not performing, Vallon teaches at the Bern University of the Arts.
