Combining voices and textures with a subtle imagination, featuring one of those stellar line-ups that Romain Pilon has a secret for, this album combines an ironclad trio formed with bassist Orlando le Fleming (Ari Hoenig, OWL Trio) and drummer Mark Whitfield, Jr. (Kenny Garrett, Black Art Jazz Collective) and a quintet with an unprecedented combination of sounds, combining the trumpet of Belgian star Jean-Paul Estiévenart with Alexis Valet, France’s new kid of vibes.

Handel's violin sonatas composed in London stretch from the heyday of the Royal Academy of Music's Italian opera productions to his last English oratorios. The original purposes, contexts and performers of the sonatas are unknown: only a few survive in autograph manuscripts, and the authorship and instrumentation of pieces preserved in unreliable early printed sources are a confusing mess. Quartetto Vanvitelli invent a narrative that explores the possibilities of emotions, sonorities and connecting tonalities that are offered by several authentic violin sonatas, a few spurious misattributions, quotations from Giulio Cesare in Egitto (1724) and arrangements from several keyboard pieces - a creative vision designed to refract light through the prism of Handel's music.

Les Frivolites Parisiennes return to b-records with a revival of Le Dieu Bleu, a ballet by Michel Fokine which premiered in 1912, and whose music by Reynaldo Hahn had not been heard in France since then. This was an exceptional project performed with a full symphonic orchestra of more than seventy musicians. The live recording is a measure of their great attention to detail.

Revolving around the first recording of Sir James MacMillan’s Kiss on Wood for viola and piano arranged and performed by Rachel Yonan, this album explores the polarity of light and darkness. Minimalist composer Arvo Pärt’s beloved Fratres and Spiegel im Spiegel bookend the program. The concept of light infuses these pieces with their intense clarity and search for transcendent meaning. Fratres (Brotherhood) evokes the struggle between good and evil with its contrasting voices. Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in Mirror) is pure and stable as it sonically imagines the infinite reflection between two mirrors.

Alone in his workshop, the sculptor Pygmalion shapes a statue of incomparable beauty, to the point of falling hopelessly in love with it. He then implores Love to bring his creation to life, and, moved by his pure devotion, Love grants his wish. With Pigmalion, Rameau crafted his finest opera-ballet, showcasing the full brilliance of his genius to depict the transformation from marble to flesh and the passionate quest for love. Alongside this, Antoine Bailleux's version offers a fresh and novel interpretation of the myth. Camille Delaforge and the ensemble Il Caravaggio deliver a brilliant performance, unveiling the full evocative power and refined elegance of Rameau's style.
