Alim Beisembayev is featured in this 14th volume of the Next Generation Mozart Soloists series. Under the baton of Howard Griffiths, the Kazakhstani pianist, who studied in Russia and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, presents two of Mozart's last piano concertos. Two years separate Concerto KV 503 and Concerto KV 537, composed in February 1788. It is nicknamed the 'Coronation Concerto' because the composer played it in Frankfurt for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II: "Both works are primarily majestic, but they also exhibit moments of playfulness, tenderness and sometimes nostalgia. There are also frequent passages that are operatic in character", says Alim Beisembayev. "For a long time I thought his music was only played by children. Perhaps we understand Mozart best as children, before we feel a hunger for 'interpretation'. I feel that Mozart's music should sound pure and innocent."

Green Book (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the official soundtrack to the 2018 Academy Award-winning film “Green Book,” composed and curated by Kris Bowers. The album blends period-accurate blues, jazz, and classical-inspired performances with original score compositions that reflect the emotional journey and historical setting of the film. It features a combination of archival recordings, reinterpreted classics, and original piano-driven cues performed by The Don Shirley Trio and various vintage artists. The soundtrack captures the contrast between elegance and social tension portrayed in the story, moving seamlessly between upbeat jazz numbers, intimate piano pieces, and atmospheric orchestral scoring. Kris Bowers’ compositions provide emotional continuity, highlighting character development and key narrative moments with subtle yet expressive musical themes. Tracks such as “Water Boy,” “Lullaby of Birdland,” and “The Lonesome Road” showcase the virtuosity of Don Shirley’s musical style, while short score cues like “Dr. Shirley's Luggage” and “Makeup for Wounds” enhance the cinematic storytelling. The result is a richly textured soundtrack that bridges classical performance, jazz heritage, and modern film scoring.

Milestones is a cross-genre project by violinist Hugo Ticciati and the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra, bringing together music by Josquin des Prez, Igor Stravinsky, and Miles Davis. Conceived around shared anniversary years, the album reflects O/Modernt’s practice of placing music from different periods and traditions into direct conversation. Instrumental arrangements and collaborative performances draw attention to common ground between Renaissance polyphony, early modernism, and jazz, particularly in approaches to rhythm, texture, and improvisation. Recorded in Germany and the UK in 2021, the project documents an ensemble-led approach that emphasises attentive listening, flexible roles for soloists, and collective music-making across stylistic boundaries.

Mithras Trio’ second album for Linn showcases early works by Shostakovich, Korngold and Lisney, continuing the ‘intriguing and eclectic’ programming The Guardian praised on its first album Eros. Fountain of Youth highlights the surprising number of piano trios written by composers at the very start of their careers and features the world premiere recording of Petrichor by cellist Joy Lisney. Commissioned by Mithras Trio and premiered at Wigmore Hall in January 2023, this evocatively titled work is named after the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. Two youthful works by Shostakovich and Korngold complete the album: in Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio we find hints of the composer’s mature style, where grotesque and late-Romantic moments mingle in a single-movement trio, and in Korngold’s first published work, the Piano Trio, Op. 1, the influences of Mahler, Strauss and Puccini do not detract from the young composer’s already unique voice and exceptional maturity.

Exploring the contemporary clarinet repertoire of South African composers reveals a sound world of striking colour and contrast. This album mirrors that spirit, showcasing the clarinet’s remarkable versatility while tracing a wide spectrum of expressive colour and energy. The concertos by leading South African composers David Earl, Roelof Temmingh and Conrad Asman were written for, or dedicated to Maria du Toit.

This first part of Fanny Hensel's collected works for piano reveals much about her character: her development from a young girl with her very first pieces full of poetry, which at the same time radiate her determination and strength, which were later to be the hallmarks of the mature composer. The years of creative freedom with daring harmonic experiments and the breaking of conventional boundaries, as in the Largo con espressione H322. The highly virtuosic, turbulent piano exercises, the C minor Sonata and the Easter Sonata, both rousing, formally mature works. Fanny's universe always leaves me in awe and admiration. Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992) revolutionized traditional tango by creating Tango Nuevo, a genre that fused traditional Argentine sounds with elements of jazz, classical music, and even rock. His compositions shifted tango from the dance halls to the concert stage, emphasizing intricate harmonies and intense emotion. While the album is a 2026 compilation, it consists of original recordings where Piazzolla plays his signature instrument, the bandoneón. These tracks are digitally remastered to take advantage of Qobuz's Hi-Res audio formats. The distinct, breathy, and percussive sound of the lead instrument is Piazzolla himself. Most of these recordings feature his famous Quinteto Tango Nuevo, including legendary collaborators like Fernando Suárez Paz (violin) and Pablo Ziegler (piano).

For me, the greatest music exists in an abstract spiritual world that is informed, but by no means determined, by the given instrumentarium. Bach had few qualms about rewriting pieces for other instruments as required, and with many musical ideas, in contrast to virtuosos of the Romantic era, for example, one has the impression that they were hardly influenced by instrumental considerations. It's like a ghostly realm, a great white hall of tones, sounds and voices. This is another reason why I found it so interesting from the outset to realize this dream project with this recording.

For more than twenty years, Haruki Murakami's novels have captivated him time and again: for pianist and composer Tim Allhoff, works such as Kafka on the Shore, 1Q84, and Naoko's Smile are more than mere literature-they are inspiration, guidance, and an enigmatic mirror of his own emotional world. With his new solo album Between Here and Nowhere, which will be released on May 15, 2026, by Neue Meister and is now the eleventh album in his discography, Allhoff has created a musical homage to the cult Japanese author, whose books have long since become a soundscape in their own right.

Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 presents a masterful collaboration between pianists Gerhard Oppitz and Nicolas Economou, performing the composer's own transcription of his final orchestral masterpiece for two pianos . Written between 1940 and 1941 at his Long Island home overlooking the Long Island Sound, Rachmaninoff's three-movement work—originally titled "Fantastic Dances" with movements "Noon," "Twilight," and "Midnight"—stands as his last major composition, emerging from a period when the composer felt "I try to capture the music simply and directly from my heart, whether love, sorrow, bitterness, or religion—all become part of my music".
