Days of Future Passed is the second album and first concept album by English rock band The Moody Blues, released in November 1967 by Deram Records. With its fusion of classical and rock elements, it has been cited as one of the first examples of progressive rock. The album's music features psychedelic rock ballads by singer-songwriter and guitarist Justin Hayward, Mellotron played by keyboardist Mike Pinder and orchestral interludes by the London Festival Orchestra. The band and the orchestra only actually play together during the last part of "Nights In White Satin." Days of Future Passed reached number 27 in the UK Albums Chart and number 3 in the US in 1972 Billboard chart.

Phish The preeminent jam band of the 1990s and early 21st century, Phish have built not only a wide-ranging and inventive body of work, but also inspired a unique and devoted fan culture similar to that of their forebears, the Grateful Dead. Formed in Vermont in the mid-'80s, Phish nurtured an ever-expanding grassroots audience who were drawn to their sterling musicianship, quirky personality, and spontaneous free-form improvisations, which included elements of psychedelia, jazz fusion, funk, progressive rock, folk, country, and blues. Building on the Dead's template, the quartet placed a greater emphasis on live performance than studio work and encouraged fans to tape and trade recordings of their concerts. By the turn of the century, Phish were one of the top-drawing live acts in the U.S., and despite their preference for the stage, they had also produced a number of strong studio efforts including Billy Breathes (1996) and Farmhouse (2000).

A double-disc collection of unheard live performances from Robin Trower's commercial peak of the late '70s, State to State: Live Across America 1974-1980 divides pretty neatly into an eight-song set from Philadelphia in 1974 on disc one, supplemented with three California cuts from the same year, then six songs from Illinois in 1976 on disc two, rounded out by two 1977 Oklahoma tracks and six cuts from Missouri in 1980. The states alone suggest how deep in the trenches Trower was in the '70s, playing venues –- and states -– that weren't glamorous but certainly had a yen for his elongated Hendrixian blues rock. State to State spans locations and years, not to mention bandmembers, but there's a unity to the 24 songs because each cut captures a guitarist eager to dismiss the basics of a song and get down to the chords so he can just jam. For those Trower fans who enjoy endless solos and overamped blues rave-ups, this shouldn't be missed.

Back To Peru Vol.1 & 2: The Most Complete Compilation of Peruvian Underground 1964-1974 stands as the ultimate, definitive treasure trove archiving the fiercely brilliant counterculture musical movement of Peru. Released by the premier reissue label Vampi Soul, this massive 56-track compilation pulls back the curtain on a legendary decade where Peruvian youth digested global rock trends and spat them back out with an unhinged, highly distinct local intensity. Vol. 1 sets the foundation, traversing razor-sharp garage stomp, heavy space-drugged psychedelic trips, and infectious Latin-funk grooves from monumental outfits like Traffic Sound, Pax, Laghonia, and Black Sugar. Vol. 2 goes even deeper into the regional underground, uncovering dizzying psych-instrumentals, fuzzed-out surf-beat, and early glimpses of Amazonian cumbia/chicha (including Los Destellos and Los Mirlos). From the wild proto-punk energy of Los Saicos and Los York's to the sophisticated chamber-pop sensibilities of We All Together, this beautifully assembled anthology captures a golden era of raw, rebellious, and wildly experimental South American sonic history.

ABC released plenty of psychedelic LPs in the late '60s that were weird, awkward mixtures of West Coast psychedelia, heavy rock, blues, pop, and more, often burdened by subpar songwriting and performers who seemed ill at ease or inexperienced in the studios. The sole Bold album fits into that niche, but if it's any recommendation or consolation, as such records go, it's certainly one of the better ones. Actually it's not bad, and a little lighter and less ponderous than most such efforts, though the lack of outstanding original material or mega-personality limits its appeal to psychedelic collectors. In addition to the trendy psychedelic-age ingredients listed earlier, Bold also added some quasi-classical organ once in a while, particularly on the opening instrumental, "Lullaby Opus Four"; "Free Fogue" even sounds like new age music…

Rock's longest, strangest trip, the Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era's most beloved musical ambassadors as well as its most enduring survivors, spreading their message of peace, love, and mind expansion across the globe throughout the better part of three decades. The object of adoration for popular music's most fervent and celebrated fan following – the Deadheads, their numbers and devotion legendary in their own right – they were the ultimate cult band, creating a self-styled universe all their own; for the better part of their career orbiting well outside of the mainstream, the Dead became superstars solely on their own terms, tie-dyed pied pipers whose epic, free-form live shows were rites of passage for an extended family of listeners who knew no cultural boundaries. The roots of the Grateful Dead lie with singer/songwriter Jerry Garcia, a longtime bluegrass enthusiast who began playing the guitar at age 15.

Electric Ladyland is the third and final studio album by English-American rock band the Jimi Hendrix Experience, released in October 1968. The double album was the only record from the band produced by Jimi Hendrix. By mid-November, it had charted at number one in the United States, where it spent two weeks at the top spot. Electric Ladyland was the Experience's most commercially successful release and their only number one album. It peaked at number six in the UK, where it spent 12 weeks on the chart. Electric Ladyland included a cover of the Bob Dylan song, "All Along the Watchtower", which became the Experience's highest-selling single and their only top 40 hit in the US, peaking at number 20; the single reached number five in the UK. Although the album confounded critics in 1968, it has since been viewed as Hendrix's best work and one of the greatest rock records of all time. Electric Ladyland has been featured on many greatest-album lists, including Q magazine's 2003 list of the 100 greatest albums and Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, on which it was ranked 54th.

This 2-CD set is a remarkable document of an incredible concert, held in 1973 at the Palacio do Anhembi, with superstars all performing in protest of the cultural bans of the military dictatorship then in power. It was an amazing festival, packed with Brazil's top talent. Spanning thirty-two live tracks, the collection captures the explosive creative energy and historical defiance of the Musica Popular Brasileira movement. Listeners are treated to legendary solo and collaborative performances from standard-bearers like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina, Jorge Ben, Gal Costa, and Chico Buarque. From traditional samba rhythms and sophisticated bossa nova to fuzz-soaked psychedelic rock and soul-jazz improvisations, this milestone compilation highlights an era where artistic expression became an act of political resistance, rendering it an essential archival piece for fans of Brazilian music history.

Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band's early personnel gradually departed, leaving the name in the hands of Carlos Santana, who guided the group to consistent commercial success over the next quarter-century. By the mid-'90s, Santana seemed spent as a commercial force on records, though the group continued to attract audiences for its concerts worldwide. But the band made a surprising and monumental comeback in 1999 with Supernatural, an album featuring many guest stars that became Santana's best-selling release and won a raft of Grammy Awards.

One of the most stunning debuts in rock history, and one of the definitive albums of the psychedelic era. On Are You Experienced?, Jimi Hendrix synthesized various elements of the cutting edge of 1967 rock into music that sounded both futuristic and rooted in the best traditions of rock, blues, pop, and soul. It was his mind-boggling guitar work, of course, that got most of the ink, building upon the experiments of British innovators like Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend to chart new sonic territories in feedback, distortion, and sheer volume.

Original Album Series is a stellar 5-CD budget box set released by Rhino Records in 2016, chronicling the complete golden-era studio and live discography of American psychedelic rock pioneers Iron Butterfly between 1968 and 1970. Housed in miniature replica cardboard sleeves, the collection traces the band's rapid stylistic journey from the fuzzed-out R&B grooves of their debut "Heavy", through the earth-shattering success of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" with its historic 17-minute title epic, and onto the sophisticated melodic structures of "Ball". Rounding out the set is the raw power of their 1970 "Live" album and their underrated final statement "Metamorphosis", which saw the group ditching the psych trimmings for twin-guitar-driven hard rock. Defined by swirling Hammond organs, heavily distorted riffs, and dark, doom-laden atmospheres, this comprehensive box set serves as an essential historical archive for fans of early American progressive rock and proto-heavy metal.

Pink Floyd Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the '70s. Of these concept albums, Dark Side of the Moon resonated strongest, earning new audiences year after year, decade after decade, and its longevity makes sense.

Weather Report started out as a jazz equivalent of what the rock world in 1970 was calling a "supergroup." But unlike most of the rock supergroups, this one not only kept going for a good 15 years, it more than lived up to its billing, practically defining the state of the jazz-rock art throughout almost all of its run. Weather Report also anticipated and contributed to the North American interest in world music rhythms and structures, prodded by keyboardist/co-founder Joe Zawinul.
