Deep Purple's 'Bombay Calling - Live in '95' is remastered and released in August 2022. This live take had only been available on bootleg-quality DVD so far. 'Bombay Calling' was recorded in early 1995 and is one of the first shows Deep Purple played with Steve Morse showcasing his virtuosic guitar skills and some of the new material would later make it onto the widely celebrated studio album 'Purpendicular'. Astonishingly, the long thought lost master tapes for this unforgettable show in Mumbai were found lying around in an old cardboard box in November 1999. A true gem for any fan, they offer rare insight into the extraordinary talents of this phenomenal rock band. The Indian press gave the concert rave reviews, with many claiming it to be the best rock show ever staged in India.

By 1970, the folk revival had all but ended. Gone were the heady days of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and “If I Had A Hammer.” Hootenanny had been cancelled. Broadside was out, Rolling Stone in. Richard Fariña was dead; Bob Dylan had plugged in. Paths paved by Joan Baez and Judy Collins had led a younger, more introspective generation of songwriters into the woods, while the ethos forged in weather-beaten hills and tempered on the lower east side of Manhattan was being reborn in the canyons of California, as songs for seagulls crafted in Joni Mitchell’s visage. Culled from beyond the crop of crit-revisionist darlings Linda Perhacs, Judee Sill, or Vashti Bunyan, Ladies From The Canyon examines the world of private folk via the works of 13 unlikely heroines who sang beneath the infrastructure of the music business, playing to coffeehouse chatter and church picnic silence. Each of these Wayfaring Strangers walk in the handmade aesthetic of lyrics scribbled into faded denim, of delicate movements captured and released.

No common ancestral folkie—no mercurial Fahey or lilting Joni—makes a fitting a touchstone to this third Wayfaring Strangers installment. These Lonesome Heroes are linked instead by mood: the turn of a strange phrase, a piano oddly mic’d, the sound of a room, both its guitar and man falling perfectly out of tune. For these somber, dark, and meditative troubadours, we opened up space for everything between a shambling revisit of some dusted Highway 61 capillary and a blue afternoon gone black. Each traveler tracked here took first steps out of his ownNowhere Special. Some made stops in common, but none ever honestly intersected, and each recording thus owes its sound to a divergent time, method, and reason. From back-porch singer-songwriters who never played a single professional gig to those dragged off stage only by years, these sung tales were mostly privately pressed, privately created, and intended for the most private of audiences: those kindred lonely few who listened along the way.

The Very Best of the New Birth Review by Andrew Hamilton
A comprehensive package of producer Harvey Fuqua's concept, New Birth Inc. consisted of the Nightlighters, Love, Peace & Happiness, and New Birth. The Nightlighters' "K-Jee" was the first hit out the box, scoring before New Birth; the lively, festival-sounding instrumental has enjoyed an amazing longevity. It's still popular at the halftimes of football games and on classic radio shows. Love, Peace & Happiness, which featured Anne Bogan and two Wilson brothers, who also sang with New Birth, are represented by one number, a soul-dripped version of "I Don't Want to Do Wrong," the Gladys Knight & the Pips smash. New Birth is well represented. Their deep soul rendition of "Dream Merchant" still sends shivers up and down one's spine, as does "Wild Flower" and the poppish "It's Impossible," sung by Londee Loren. Attempts at disco are less pleasing, but on this package the songs "I Wash My Hands of the Whole Damn Deal," "Comin' from All Ends," and "Keep on Doin' It" are more palatable.

Essential: 80s Love is a better-than-average three-disc set highlighting 60 pop singles released in that decade. Along with the original versions of such hits as "Hold Me Now" (Thompson Twins), "Eternal Flame" (Bangles), "All Out of Love" (Air Supply), "Can't Fight This Feeling," (REO Speedwagon), and "Let's Hear It for the Boy" (Deniece Williams), are less-than-obvious inclusions by Deacon Blue, FM, Dee C. Lee, and Five Star.

This release consists of mono versions of the 11 original tracks plus four remastered stereo alternative takes. In addition to the studio material, this package includes four previously unreleased live recordings from La Maison in 1966, including 'We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place' and two other previously unreleased tracks. Live at Last is a live album by the British folk rock band Steeleye Span. It is the first live album the band issued, after eight years of performing and releasing 10 studio albums. It was originally intended to be a farewell album. "This then is our eleventh and final album. Steeleye Span amicably disbanded five days after making this recording for reasons that are irrelevant here.” It is one of only two albums the band issued on which John Kirkpatrick played (not counting a later live reunion album, The Journey), making it one of only two albums to employ an accordion as a primary instrument. The album is also notable because only two of the tracks ("Saucy Sailor/Black Freighter" and "False Knight on the Road") were songs that the band had recorded before, so that most of the material on the album is essentially new material. The band went on to release a second live version of "The Maid and the Palmer" on The Journey.

Life Line: The Songs of Nilsson 1967-1971 Review by Steve Leggett
Harry Nilsson was always a maverick artist, following his own sense of style in the world of pop, turning out carefully crafted – even baffling – songs that shared no direct affinity with any other artist of his day, although in some ways he resembled Randy Newman (even recording a marvelous album of Newman covers). Both men drew on American Tin Pan Alley traditions, but while Newman used them to craft his own ironic view of the little cruelties and occasional kindnesses of the human condition, there was a part of Nilsson that always wanted to actually be that tradition, making him, in some ways, an extremely crafty, artful and very postmodern vaudeville act stuck just slightly out of time. This collection has plenty of Harry Nilsson gems, including his own version of "One" (a huge hit for Three Dog Night), the fascinatingly realized "1941," the infectious and cartoon-like "Me and My Arrow," and the delightful "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City," but it lacks some obvious tracks like his two dance singles "Coconut" and "Jump into the Fire," so it doesn't make the ideal introduction to this unique artist, but there's more than enough here to convince anyone that Nilsson was a one of a kind pop treasure.

At the end of the month, Edsel will issue Songs, a 12CD box set that brings together Michael Nesmith solo albums issued under two different labels. The set kicks off in 1970 with Magnetic South, as a prolific Nesmith went on to issue six albums on RCA in just three years, including the ironically-titled …And The Hits Just Keep on Comin’ which included his own version of ‘Different Drum’, which had been a hit for Linda Ronstadt back in 1967. 1975’s The Prison was the first album on his own label Pacific Arts. This conceptual offering included a novella that was meant to be read while listening to the album as its ‘soundtrack’. Nesmith did the same with 1994’s The Garden (also included here).

Dietrich Buxtehude, Dietrich also spelled Dieterich, (born 1637, probably in Oldesloe, Holstein—died May 9, 1707, Lübeck), Danish or German organist and composer of church music, one of the most esteemed and influential composers of his time.
His exact place of birth is uncertain, and nothing is known of his early youth. It is usually assumed that he began his musical education with his father, who was organist at Helsingborg (c. 1638–41) and at Helsingør (Elsinore; c. 1642–71), both then part of Denmark. Buxtehude settled at Lübeck in 1688 as organist of St. Mary’s Church.
