Formed in L.A. in 1978 as a hybrid of Los Angeles and Boston musicians playing in local punk/new wave bands and was active until the mid-1980s. Marina Muhlfriedel founded the seminal L.A. punk/pop band Backstage Pass; drummer Doug Orilio was in Boston's Reddy Teddy, and Mick Muhlfriedel and Alec Murphy played with various Boston bands including Human Sexual Response. When he joined the band, lead singer Terrance Robay was fresh off playing James Dean on the London stage. Connie DiSilva was a prodigy synth player and radio DJ.

Their music inspired many gospel, soul and R&B artists including Jackie Wilson and James Brown. The Dixie Hummingbirds were one of the longest-established and most influential gospel groups in the history of the genre, their career, through various evolving line-ups eventually lasting more than 80 years. Their style developed from the jubilee quartet approach of the 1930s through the 'hard gospel' of the music's golden era in post-war years to the more soul-tinged style of later times. This collection spans their development from their original line-up as their style gradually changed, with lead singer Ira Tucker being a constant link through the whole of the set.

Originally released by Pickwick Records in 1978, the first recorded Con Funk Shun album ‘Organized Con Funk Shun’. The band’s official debut album ‘Con Funk Shun’ was released in 1976 and features the track ‘Sure Feels Good To Me’, which is also featured in an alternative mix on ‘Organized’ album. It is the first time ‘Organized Con Funk Shun’ has been available on CD, digital download and streaming.

"L'Été indien" (French, 'Indian summer') is a 1975 single by American-French singer Joe Dassin. In the song he reflects with fond memories of his lover, whom he met during an indian summer, but with whom he has now lost contact. The song was based on the song "Africa" by Toto Cutugno, Vito Pallavicini, Pasquale Losito, and Sam Ward (originally released by Toto Cutugno's band Albatros [it]), hence the subtitle ["L'Été indien (Africa)"] on some single releases. It was adapted into French by Claude Lemesle and Pierre Delanoë, arranged by Johnny Arthey and produced by Jacques Plait. "L'Été indien" went on to become Dassin's biggest hit, selling almost 2 million copies worldwide.

In that same year, she earned a Grammy for best musical theater album. “They jump off cliffs, they start to fly, we get to see it and it’s so inspiring that you put out an album,” she said.

Formed in Boston's underground scene in 1982 by Judy Grunwald, Beth Kaplan, and Susan Merriam, Salem 66 created a trailblazing blend of post-punk, psychedelic pop, and experimental rock. An unsung influence on later woman-led independent bands, they forged a distinctive sound characterized by haunting vocals, melodic basslines, complex arrangements, and intensely vulnerable lyrics. From 1983 to 1988, the band recorded and toured extensively, sharing stages with the Butthole Surfers, Mission of Burma, and Dinosaur Jr. The first reissue of Salem 66’s music, SALT collects ten songs chosen by the songwriters from their cult-classic Homestead EP, singles, and four full-lengths, accompanied by a critical essay by musician Franklin Bruno, and retrospective notes by Grunwald and Kaplan.

On August 11th, 1990, Aerosmith performed at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York. This performance was recorded from a live FM broadcast. Collects 14 tracks including Hangman Jury; One Way Street; Dream On; Walkin' the Dog; Train Kept A-Rollin'; and more. At the beginning of the 1990s, aerosmith were celebrating a high point in their career. In the wake of 1987’s permanent vacation, which had gone 5 x platinum and spawned the top 20 singles ‘dude (looks like a lady)’, ‘rag doll’ and ‘angel’, their 1989 follow up pump was an even greater success. With four hit singles, all on heavy rotation at mtv, pump was certified 7 x platinum in the u.S. Alone, and earned aerosmith their first grammy award, for the song ‘janie got a gun’. In addition, ‘janie’ also received two mtv video music awards, and is still regularly featured in lists of all-time great videos.

By 1996, following the international success of her 1995 record To Bring You My Love and experimental collaboration Dance Hall at Louse Point with John Parish, Harvey began composing material that would end up on her fourth studio album, during what she referred to as "an incredibly low patch". The material diverged significantly from her previous work and introduced electronica elements into her song-writing. During recording sessions in 1997 original PJ Harvey Trio drummer Rob Ellis rejoined Harvey's band, and Flood was hired again as producer. The sessions, which continued into April the following year, resulted in Is This Desire? (1998). Though originally released to mixed reviews in September 1998, the album was a success and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Performance. The album's lead single, ‘A Perfect Day Elise,’ peaked at number 25 on the UK Singles Chart, her most successful single to date. In Summer ’98, PJ played a number of festival dates across Europe – which included a dynamic set at the UK’s V.

CLASSIC, EARLY FESTIVAL BROADCASTS FROM A YOUNG MUSE On 24 December ‘98, Muse signed a deal with American label Maverick Records. Upon their return to England, Taste Media arranged deals for Muse with various labels in Europe and Australia, allowing them control over their career in individual countries. The band's first album, Showbiz, showcased Muse's aggressive yet melancholic musical style. Muse toured relentlessly in 1999, covering dates right across Europe, and even played a week of shows in North America. In Y2K, the group re-assembled in January for more European and UK gigs, then travelled to Japan and Australia. Next, they went back to the US, this time for a month, then came back to UK and Europe for more shows, before picking up the European and Asian Festival circuits from June ’00. The recordings featured on this CD all come from broadcasts of such events, and feature cuts from sets played at the Netherlands’ Pinkpop Festival in June, Germany’s Bizarre Festival in August, Japan’s Summer Sonic Festival in Fuji-Yoshida in August too, and at the UK’s Reading Festival at the end of the month.

After living for some time in New York, Frank Zappa and The Mothers returned to Los Angeles in mid-1968, and the Zappas moved into a house on Laurel Canyon Boulevard, only to move again to Woodrow Wilson Drive (Zappa's home for the rest of his life). Despite being successful in Europe, The Mothers were not doing well financially. Their first records were vocally oriented, but as Zappa wrote more instrumental jazz and classical style music for the band's concerts, audiences were confused. In early 1969 there were nine band members and Zappa was supporting the group from his publishing royalties whether they played or not. It was this ensemble who performed a stunning and legendary show at Lawrence University Chapel in Appleton, WI, on May 23rd 1969. Performed less than a month after the release of The Mothers Of Invention’s sixth studio album, the challenging and partially structureless Uncle Meat - which Rolling Stone described as "inspired monstrosity … [an] assault of glorious noise" - the concert is equally somewhat demanding.

Shortly before the release of his third solo album, Peter Gabriel embarked on a mini-tour of the U.K. that began in Exeter on 20th February 1980 and ended in Bath mid-March. The tour served as a teaser of sorts for the upcoming LP and offered an opportunity to see Gabriel flesh out the new songs in a live setting before touring the album worldwide in July. One of the finest shows played on this short tour was at Sophia Gardens Pavilion in Cardiff, Wales, on 7th March 1980, a set that was also recorded for live radio transmission. Playing a quite sensational show that featured 9 new songs from the forthcoming album, along with a smattering of classics and a fascinating version of ‘We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37)’ (that would not see release until 1986’s So), Peter Gabriel was in scintillating form throughout the night. Previously unreleased, this excellent live document of Peter Gabriel in his ascendancy is now available on this CD for the first time.

Coast to Coast: Overture and Beginners is a 1974 live album credited to Rod Stewart/Faces. Stewart's practice was not giving concerts as a solo act at the time, but rather appearing jointly with the Faces, thus the dual crediting.
