Sold with Mojo July 2025 (#380). Not for resale. THE LEGEND OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD OFTEN PIVOTS on psychedelic largesse, on a spirit of musical exploration that transcends earthly limits. Listen to a live version of Dark Star – the 23-minute take on Live/Dead is a decent one to start with – and the Dead sound untethered from music’s history and conventions. The truth, though, is much richer and more complicated. Jerry Garcia and his bandmates started their adventures from a position of profound knowledge; an understanding of blues, bluegrass, soul, country and rock’n’roll that was both scholarly and intuitive.

The American who changed the sound of British rock’n’roll. This unprecedented anthology draws upon both signature hits and some spectacular misses, along with unheard rarities from the producer’s personal archive. Until now, Ace’s acclaimed Producer series has more or less focused on the legends of the American music business. This latest instalment is no different, save for the arena. “Making Time: A Shel Talmy Production” celebrates the activities of a soft-spoken, myopic Chicagoan who walked right into the British music industry and, in his own low-key manner, turned it upside-down.

REDISCOVERED REBORN AND REMASTERED Throughout the 70s and into the 80s, Fable and Image were the foremost Australian independent record labels, along with a few other 'indies' like Martin Erdman's DuMonde label. The previous volumes of Lost Hits of the 70s & 80s have been draw exclusively from the vaults of the Fable/Image catalogues and their subsidiary labels, but for Volume 3 we have cast a wider net to catch some elusive hits from other labels as well. As before, this collection is a mixture of original songs (Ginger Man, Bonnie Please Don't Go, Captain Zero, Carmilla etc) and 'cover versions' of (usually) UK hits such as Flake's This Wheel's On Fire, Autumn's Yellow River, The Allniters' Montego Bay and Pat Carroll's All Kinds Of Everything, to name just a few. Many of these recordings became hits because of the infamous 'radio ban' of the early 70s, in which - due to a dispute between record companies and radio stations over royalties - many UK hits were not played on Australian radio. This gave the independents the opportunity to record cover versions of the UK hits and, in many cases, launch the careers of great Australian artists. So, collected together for the first time on CD, here are 20 more lost hits of the 70s and 80s.

Triple-disc collection from Virgin Records featuring acoustic tracks from Al Stewart, America, Bert Jansch, Bob Dylan, Buffy Saint-Marie, David Gray, Don McLean, Kirsty MacColl, Gary Jules, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Mc Cartney, Tracy Chapman, Jim Croce and many more. 2004. Here’s a 65 track, 3 x CD compilation of ‘acoustic’ tracks from the 1950s through to the early 2000s. By far, one of the best compilations out there with well known hits brilliantly placed together with lesser known classics that didn’t always trouble the chart placings. There certainly isn’t a ‘filler’ track on any of the discs and even the more ‘folky’ disc 3 is superbly constructed to keep the listener enthralled throughout.

Alligator Records shows a different side of its house-rocking face on this 13-cut collection of acoustic blues. While Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Bukka White don't appear here, other performers – some of whom one normally associates with overdriven electricity – are. Buddy Guy is present, as is Stevie Ray Vaughan. Koko Taylor's "The Man Next Door" is here and it's one of her greatest performances on record. In addition, Johnny Winter, who was no stranger to a National Steel string bottleneck earlier in his career, returns to give it another go, and the true roots doctor Corey Harris is here with "God Don't Ever Change," and Carey and Lurrie Bell with "Stop Running Around." Guy's "Hi Heel Sneakers" is terrific as is Winter's "Evil on My Mind." But it's those that are normally associated with the acoustic blues like Harris, Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women, Cephas & Wiggins, John Jackson and the legendary Sonny Terry who come off best, bringing the true rhythm and mystery with them into their songs.

The song that went around the world has, like its story, long ago become a legend, and several times the subject of film plots. A cloth from which dreams are cut: One was named Betty, was called Lili and worked in a vegetable cellar. The other was a nurse and was named Marleen. The young soldier, who had to stand watch at the army base, loved them both. So much, that he immortalized them in a poem, in which both girls into merged one figure: Lili Marleen. A quarter century later the song became a hit that was sent nightly into the ether from a German soldiers’ radio station in Belgrade, overnight beginning its triumphant advance around the world.

Genre: Punk Rock, New Wave, Pop Punk, Post-Punk

The brilliance of this collection is that it combines the standard Brit-punk anthems by the Sex Pistols, the Damned, the Buzzcocks, and Stiff Little Fingers with other great songs that typify the variety and range of punk-era independent music from both sides of the Atlantic. The songs are so well chosen that the punk aesthetic is further revealed by the inclusion of songs that characterize pub rock, new wave, and other related genres. The usual punk suspects ("New Rose," "Anarchy in the UK") are all here, along with many other treasures: Dr. Feelgood's "Milk and Alcohol", Devo's "Mongoloid," Jonathan Richman's "Roadrunner," Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer," and Television's "Marquee Moon." The less commonly anthologized punk selections are inspired, too: the Ruts' "Babylon Is Burning," Generation X's "Ready Steady Go," and X-Ray Spex's "Identity," along with the seminal "Sheena is a Punk Rocker." The conception of the genre is expanded further to include Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, XTC, Joe Jackson, the Pretenders, the Tubes, and Blondie, and their presence overcomes the tendency for boring repetition on a very long collection.
