For those who don't want or can't afford to plonk out for the Toots & the Maytals' Time Tough: The Anthology, The Very Best Of provides the perfect solution, distilling down that two-CD, 41-track set to a single 19-song disc. There are a few subtle differences, however; for starters this set boasts two different versions of the band's reggae smash "54-46, That's My Number," as well as the original ska version of their Jamaican Song Festival winner "Bam Bam," unlike the anthology, which included only a later remodel. However, the "Never You Change" found on this set is not the trio's original ska hit, but a reggae-fied remake. The rest of the album pulls directly from the anthology, with the disc divided almost evenly between the trio and a solo Hibbert's pre- and post-Island career. Thus, for those who prefer the Maytals' ska and/or reggae hits, this is not the collection for you, as there are much better compilations of those periods. But for fans looking for a larger overview of both the band and Hibbert himself, this is an excellent place to start.

In 1963, a 21-year-old welder with dreams of becoming a full-time singer-songwriter, auditioned for one of Jamaica's new elite record producers, Leslie Kong, owner of the recently launched Beverley's Records label. Surveying Jamaican music at the point it transcended Jazz, rock, soul and calypso influences to create the foundations for what would become reggae music. The Complete Beat contains the band's three studio albums (1980's I Just Can't Stop It, '81's Wha'ppen and Special Beat Service from 1982), each featuring bonus tracks. The set also includes a bonus two CD set made up of a disc of extended remixes plus a disc of Peel and BBC Radio sessions. Contemporaries of the Specials, Bad Manners and Madness, The English Beat (AKA the Beat outside of the U.S.) were part of the Ska revival scene that swept the UK in the late '70s. By the time they released the album Special Beat Service, they had matured into an MTV-ready Pop/New Wave band before splitting shortly thereafter. This box set contains all the hits, every album track, non album a and B-sides, unreleased live performances and much more.

My Secret Life is an album by Eric Burdon released in 2004. It was his first solo album release, which contains new titles, in nearly 16 years. It was his comeback album. It features many different musical directions such as jazz, blues, soul, rock, ska, rhythm and blues, folk, boogie, world and pop. Burdon said in an interview that every song is different. Musicians on this album includes Red Young, Martin Gerschwitz, Terry Wilson and Jon Cleary. Besides presenting the song composed in partnership with the Brazilian rocker Marcelo Nova "Black & White World" Eric Burdon shed to the English and re-recorded two songs of Marcelo Nova: "A Garota da Motocicleta" turned "Motorcycle Girl" while "Coração Satânico" became "Devil's Slide".
