The Munich Radio Orchestra (German: Münchener Rundfunkorchester) is associated with Germany's Bavarian Radio public broadcaster, but should not be confused with the network's other orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks), which is devoted to mainstream symphonic repertory.

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Gábor Takács-Nagy continue their acclaimed survey of Mozart’s Piano Concertos with this tenth volume, concentrating on the very early works of the child-genius composer. As an exercise, his father, Leopold, tasked the eleven-year-old Mozart with creating concertos from existing works by (then popular, but now mostly forgotten) other composers. This ‘pasticcio’ technique was in fact quite common in the late baroque and early classical periods, especially for the creation of dramatic entertainment. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet explains: ‘Mozart’s contribution extends only to the orchestral part, for Mozart did not alter a note in the keyboard part of those pieces that Leopold had chosen for him. Excellent pedagogue that he was, Leopold did not only prepare only an exercise in orchestration, but also a procedure to allow his miraculously gifted young son to become acquainted with the form of the concerto.’ The four concertos are complemented by two overtures from Mozart’s earliest works in the operatic genre: Apollo et Hyacinthus and Bastien und Bastienne.

After tackling the sonatas for violin and piano of Bach, Busoni and Beethoven in 2017 – a “thoughtfully determined and subtly interconnected programme” according to Strad magazine –, the duo of Yuuko Shiokawa and András Schiff returns with striking renditions of Brahms’s Violin Sonata No. 1 and Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 2. Brahms’s First Violin Sonata in G major, known as the “Regenliedsonate” (Rain Sonata)”, is presented in a lush interpretation and stands in evocative juxtaposition with Schumann’s at times vigorously driving Sonata in D minor. Devoting themselves completely to the music of these close composer-friends, Shiokawa and Schiff once again display their own rare duo understanding throughout this third joint undertaking for ECM’s New Series. The album was produced by Manfred Eicher.

Ivor Gurney was a poet as well as a composer and was accomplished in a number of musical genres including song. With his intuitive approach to poetry he selected texts widely, from contemporaries to ballads, Elizabethan and Jacobean poets, and even set his own lyrics. This wide-ranging selection includes his masterpieces – among them Sleep and Severn Meadows – with several songs heard in their first recording. Marcus Farnsworth, First Prize winner in the 2009 Wigmore Hall International Song Competition, has been praised for his ‘superbly controlled baritone voice’ (Fanfare). This album is Volume 24 in The English Song Series on Naxos.

After the success of the complete works for lute by J. S. Bach, crowned by the recognition of international critics (Diapason d'Or, Choc de Classica, Excepcional Scherzo, Record Geijutsu, Eccezionale di Musica, Joker Absolu Crescendo), Evangelina offers a double album dedicated to the music of the greatest lutenist of all time: Sylvius Leopold Weiss. In his work, virtuosity and sumptuousness merge against the elegant and ethereal background of the gallant encounters and court dances of the 18th century. A new recording that restores the lute to its due and ancient glories.

A question arising rather naturally when one considers the piano repertoire for the left hand alone is “why should one play with one hand instead of two?”. There may be a number of reasons, and the works recorded on this Da Vinci Classics album represent a variety of answers to this question.A first reason may be mere virtuosity, or even “showing off”. It is almost a refined, artistic version of people riding a monocycle instead of a bicycle, or riding a horse without using a saddle.

Joseph Franz Weigl, the father of our composer, was the principal cellist in Prince Esterházy's orchestra, thus serving under the kapellmeister Joseph Haydn, who was the godfather at the son's baptism in 1766 and likely had a hand in the boy's musical education. Weigl junior was taught by Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Antonio Salieri, under whose guidance he flourished. He assisted Mozart with the premieres of Figaro, Così fan tutte, and Don Giovanni, partly conducting subsequent performances of these works and getting an early taste of the theater world. His own operas and singspiels were successful, benefiting from his enviable melodic talent. Listen to the six delightful trios for oboe, violin, and cello assembled here, which, as light-hearted interludes, provide exquisite entertainment from the first to the last measure. Indeed, such mastery is something to aspire to!

We know relatively little about the composer and church musician Paul Ignaz Liechtenauer. His father was an organ builder and organist in Vienna, and Liechtenauer himself served as Kapellmeister in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein until 1711. By 1715, he had taken up the position of organist at the Cathedral of Osnabrück, soon after assuming the title of "Capellmeister" and gaining a reputation for his liturgical music that was widely acclaimed. Four of the six masses he published in 1741 as Opus 2 are now featured on the latest CD by the Kölner Akademie, which, under the direction of its founder, Michael Alexander Willens, once again astonishes us. There is a touch of local patriotism in this release: classic production osnabrück is located less than ten kilometers from the high church where the composer served for over 40 years.

The brilliant dynamism of Italian Baroque music is at its most virtuosic and thrilling in works featuring the solo trumpet, whether in original compositions or transcriptions. Albinoni’s astonishing ornamentations and the luminous dexterity of Vivaldi’s concerto both represent each composer’s distinctive character, heard alongside works by Corelli, Grossi, Zipoli, Baldassare and Torelli. Domenico Sarri’s Sinfonia a 5 is heard here in its world premiere recording. Thomas Reiner is an acknowledged exponent of this repertoire with his performance of German Baroque Trumpet Concertos (Naxos 8.551419) described as ‘first rate and spirited… an excellent protagonist’ by Fanfare magazine.

Even nearly 200 years after Beethoven's death, his music still has much to discover. Pianist Ulrich Roman Murtfeld presents on his new GENUIN Album a curated selection of piano works by the Viennese genius, including both rarities and famous pieces. He juxtaposes the magnificent "Waldstein Sonata" with the early Sonata in E-flat Major, op. 7, and the furious "Rage Over a Lost Penny" with the variation works on a "Swiss Song" and "God Save the King." Murtfeld’s refined and precise piano playing brings both new discoveries and great classics to light!

Around 1680, Dieterich Buxtehude composed Membra Jesu Nostri, a cycle of seven cantatas combining mystical medieval poetry and lyrical excerpts from the Old Testament to venerate the wounds of Christ. In 2021, Swiss composer Xavier Dayer echoes this with Afin que le lion féroce ne l’attaque pas. He joins the five singers and ten instrumentalists of Membra Jesu Nostri with a modern wind quintet, questioning in his own words the protective force of the artistic and contemplative gesture, in the interweaving of sonorities between ancient and modern instruments and human voices.
