His Majesty’s Pop Life (subtitled "The Purple Mix Club") is a compilation album of Prince’s studio work, initially released in 1985 as a promotional record in Japan only, following the commercial release of Around The World In A Day and its associated singles. At that time, it was Prince’s third promotional compilation album (after a 1984 sampler and Strange Tales From the Rain). His Majesty’s Pop Life was re-released worldwide in a limited quantity (14 000 copies) for the Record Store Day on 13 April 2019, becoming Prince’s eight compilation album and the fifth posthumous release. In 2020, the album received a wider retail release in Japan only, including its first release on CD.

The unexpected death of Prince has shook the musical world, not only because of dying at an early age, but mostly, because we have lost one of the greatest talents of pop culture of the last 50 years. The Many Faces Of Prince is a heartfelt tribute to his work, and shows the lesser known facets of his career, like his beginnings as part of the funk group 94 East. You will also find his songs in versions performed by pop stars like The Art Of Noise, Ice T, Gary Numan and Sheila E. Finally, the Many Faces also takes a tour through his influences. The Many Faces Of Prince is a compendium of fantastic music that will delight not only fans of the artist but also anyone who wants to dive into the legacy of one of the greatest artists of our time.

Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince–looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"–proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. The usual hype surrounding a Prince release attended this one; over the long-term, expect a few standouts within a way worth-it set to emerge. They include the danceable "Love"; the gospel-lite falsetto feast "Satisfied"; and the summer-breezy "Beautiful, Loved & Blessed".

No other artist of the rock & roll era compares to Prince. He was the rare combination of a visionary pop conceptualist and master musician who could capture the sounds he imagined, a quality that fueled his remarkable success in the 1980s. Ideas came to Prince so quickly, they couldn't be contained on his own records, either with or without his backing band the Revolution.

Even geniuses (maybe especially geniuses) are taken for granted, not seen as geniuses, or only appreciated in small doses. Which is a grandiose way of saying that, no matter how partisans may complain, there are many listeners out there that don't want to delve into the deliriously rich catalog of Prince and would rather spend time with a single disc of all the hits – especially since the first singles compilation was botched, spread too thin over two discs and sequenced as if it were on shuffle play.

Prince: one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century, creator of countless hits and just as many classic albums, and an enigma with a seemingly endless vault of masterpieces only now seeing the light of day. We had to pay tribute to this one-of-a-kind artist. We’re proud to deliver thirteen string quartet renditions of our favorite songs from The High Priest of Pop's catalogue. From “Raspberry Beret” to “Purple Rain,” we’ve got the best, but trust us, it wasn’t easy choosing.

On his debut album, "For You", Prince shows exceptional skill for arranging and performing mainstream urban R&B and funk, but his songwriting remains conventional. Only on the mildly racy "Soft and Wet" does he demonstrate a personal touch, but the song is still more of a promise than a fulfillment. While "For You" isn't a bad record, it is merely a pleasant one, and it offers very little indication of his staggering talents.

An innovator and a musical genius bar none, Prince nevertheless took huge influence, both before and during his musical career, from the music, production and compositions of others. He was of course well versed in jazz, soul, R n B, funk and black music generally from an early age, but garnered a fully eclectic taste which was equally informed by Joni Mitchell and Todd Rundgren as it was by James Brown and George Clinton. This collection features 16 tracks which Prince highlighted as being influential during his career, performed cover versions of, or ranked the artists responsible as inspirational and important in his own work.

Listening to this Purple Rain-era live show from Syracuse in 1985, you’re reminded how introverted Prince was. Does he dazzle? Yes. Does he dance? Yes—and shred, and sweat, and offer you his most carnal love. But he also creates a sense of interiority that, if not at odds with how physical the music is, at least feels remarkable when you remember there were 50,000 people there with him. God and Satan (“Let’s Go Crazy”), Mom and Dad (“When Doves Cry”), U and Me (“Let’s Pretend We’re Married”): He sees the lines and he blurs them. The funniest banter comes on “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” when he asks, “Does your man have an ass like mine?” But the one that gets under your skin is on “God” because when he says, “I know you better than you think I do,” he says it like he might.
