Frank Zappa Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on jazz and complicated, modern serious music, sometimes inducing orchestras to play along.

With familiar Chillhop names like The BREED, Birocratic, Psalm Trees, No Spirit, Ian Ewing, Aviino, and dozens of others, this compilation is packed with a beautiful kind of solitude, one that makes the world feel small and precious. Like an astronaut seeing our planet out of their window for the first time or someone on Earth in need of sitting still for a moment to relax and unwind. Press play as you moon cruise, as you apartment search on Mars, taking a smooth detour to avoid an asteroid storm. Sit back and maintain your chill, because after all, this is the coolest part of the galaxy.

Here you have three absolutely breathtaking jazz performers locked into a studio for a day or so. From this combination of guitar, standup bass, and acoustic drum kit, you've got nine tracks of sheer jazz joy – three guys just blowing for the hell of it, recorded on the fly. There's a strong sense here that engineer Rob Eaton probably tried to get everybody properly set up and balanced before the session started and just gave up when everybody started playing. It's a delight to hear, because everything has gone into the performance, which is spontaneous and graceful – no going back for the next take here. Pat Metheny's playing is definitely modernistic, highly fluid, almost liquid lightning – no effects boxes here, though (he does play Synclavier on the last track, "Three Flights Up," but it's great anyway). Roy Haynes, likewise, should be heard by anybody wanting to get behind the traps: this man has a sense of humor, and he's a blur of motion. Dave Holland, on bass, is no slouch either, keeping pace with Metheny's guitar lines, and balancing up against Haynes' drums. Together, these guys are incredible.

Ruby Rushton’s fifth studio album Legacy! written by band leader Tenderlonious and keys player Aidan Shepherd, marks a new chapter for the hugely influential UK jazz group. In the past the band - which also includes trumpeter Nick Walters and drummer Tim Carnegie - worked with a “one take” live approach; avoiding the use of overdubs. For Legacy! the four musicians decided to combine their virtuosic abilities with Tenderlonious’ studio production skills. Each of the compositions sees layers of horn and flute lines added to the melodies on top of the original live takes. The result is impressive; the listener is left with a wider sonic spectrum than previously heard on Ruby Rushton albums.

A jazz standard reimagined without nostalgia—bare, exposed, and emotionally raw. The first listen from Niia’s upcoming project on the relaunched heritage Jazz label Candid Records. On Angel Eyes, Niia reimagines the beloved 1946 jazz standard by Matt Dennis & Earl B. Brent—famously interpreted by many of the jazz greats, but most notably by Chet Baker, whose cool‑jazz rendition remains a defining touchstone of Niia’s musical center. Slow phrasing, minimal vibrato, and soft reharmonization deliver a farewell to tradition. Niia’s version, produced with Spencer Zahn, bridges vintage elegance with modern warmth. A bold, heartfelt nod to tradition—and a thrilling first glimpse of what’s to come. This is the sound of a modern day Jazz Singer.

When Joanna Loved Me (1974). A compelling little record from guitarist Dom Minasi - a player we only know from these few Blue Note albums cut right toward's the label's initial run - sweet albums that might have pushed Dom further, had they gotten better exposure! Minasi's a pretty talented guitarist - with a style that's somewhere between the quirkiness of Sonny Greenwich, and the smooth sound of Earl Klugh - and while the style here might show some of the elements of Klugh's initial work for Blue Note, the overall presentation is a lot more stripped down - never too smooth, and with plenty of focus on the jazz elements in Dom's music…
