Forty-five years into the band's career, the seemingly straightforward numerical system Chicago follow to title their albums has gotten confusing. Their 2014 offering Now: Chicago XXXVI is clearly their 36th record but it is only their 23rd studio album and, to muddle matters more, it is their first collection of brand-new original material since Chicago XXX in 2006 (the 2008 release of Chicago XXXII: Stone of Sisyphus doesn't really count, as that was initially scheduled for release in 1994, which would've made it Chicago XXII or so). Hence, the decision to put "Now" in front of Chicago XXXVI instead of behind: it emphasizes that this record showcases the band in the present, not the past. That Chicago's Now sounds tethered to the Chicago of the early '80s is neither here nor there…

Paul Weller's Hit Parade (Yep Roc), his first ever career spanning box set, chronicles 30 years of milestone work from one of the world's best songwriters. Four disks long and including a 60 page booklet, Hit Parade is a comprehensive Weller collection. Between 1977 and 1982, Weller released six wildly successful albums with The Jam, who still hold the UK record for most simultaneous Top 75 singles (including US smash ''Town Called Malice''). After The Jam, Weller formed The Style Council, with whom he scored 19 consecutive hits on the UK charts and performed at Live Aid. Since 1992, Weller has released eight critically acclaimed studio albums, including Stanley Road, considered one of the best British rock albums of all time.

Benji is a lot of people's favorite Sun Kil Moon album. Maybe that's where you discovered Mark, or maybe you were a long time fan, but his plain spoken songs about loss and death just touched you in a way that you've never been able to shake. Whatever the reason, Benji remains an incredible, magical album, that not only holds up to repeated listens, but gets better and better with age. For the 10th anniversary repress of Benji I have been gifted with unheard live tracks that are seeing the light of day for the first time ever!

On par with the most treasured concert albums of the 60s and 70s, Bill Withers’ transformative Live at Carnegie Hall is a forgotten classic—an easygoing portrait of a down-home soul artist coming into his own in front of an audience eager to share every moment of his brilliance. Soothing with subtlety, charming with calmness, and healing with a vocal timbre as relaxing as his grooves, Withers uses the stage to expand the range of favorites and engage in dialog with the crowd. Distinguished with sonics that restore the performances’ balance and improve the soundstaging, this reissue takes you inside the venue. Moreover, aspects that really make this concert document unique—the energetic crowd, Withers and his band’s willingness to extend arrangements, and the undeniable communicative bond between the performer and his fans—are brought into fuller relief. While most live albums give you the sense of what transpired, Mobile Fidelity’s reissue allows it to seem that what you’re hearing and sensing is happening right now, in the moment.

Few rock & roll records rock as hard or with as much originality as the Pretenders' eponymous debut album. A sleek, stylish fusion of Stonesy rock & roll, new wave pop, and pure punk aggression, Pretenders is teeming with sharp hooks and a viciously cool attitude. Although Chrissie Hynde establishes herself as a forceful and distinctively feminine songwriter, the record isn't a singer/songwriter's tour de force – it's a rock & roll album, powered by a unique and aggressive band. Guitarist James Honeyman-Scott never plays conventional riffs or leads, and his phased, treated guitar gives new dimension to the pounding rhythms of "Precious," "Tattooed Love Boys," "Up the Neck," and "The Wait," as well as the more measured pop of "Kid," "Brass in Pocket," and "Mystery Achievement." He provides the perfect backing for Hynde and her tough, sexy swagger. Hynde doesn't fit into any conventional female rock stereotype, and neither do her songs, alternately displaying a steely exterior or a disarming emotional vulnerability.

Hybrid Mono SACD for sale individually and as part of Analogue Productions’ Prestige Mono Series, Mini "old style" gatefold jacket packaging. There are a multitude of reasons why Bags' Groove remains a cornerstone of the post-bop genre. Of course there will always be the lure of the urban myth surrounding the Christmas Eve 1954 session – featuring Thelonious Monk – which is documented on the two takes of the title track. There are obviously more tangible elements, such as Davis' practically telepathic runs with Sonny Rollins (tenor sax). Or Horace Silver's (piano) uncanny ability to provide a stream of chord progressions that supply a second inconspicuous lead without ever overpowering. Indeed, Davis' choice of former Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra and concurrent Modern Jazz Quartet members Milt Jackson (vibes), Kenny Clarke (drums), and Percy Heath (bass) is obviously well-informed.

Johann Stamitz’s six Violin Sonatas op. 6 were first published following his death - which is hardly surprising, for who besides the composer himself would then have been able to meet their breakneck violinistic challenges? Stamitz was famous for his absolutely incredible finger dexterity, a reputation that this father of the German violin school continues to enjoy even today.

The saying "never trust a synth pop band over 30" goes out the window as the arena-filling Depeche Mode present the 2014 film Live in Berlin, a career-spanning set that breathes new life into old numbers, while tackling new tunes with the same power and commitment. Thank lead singer and hyped showman David Gahan for all the power, as on this soundtrack, he growls, cries out, and full-bodied croons these soul-bearing lyrics, including the Delta Machine newbie "Should Be Higher," which soars about three or four stories higher that its studio version. Gahan takes the verses as if he's Leonard Cohen, and then belts the chorus like he's Freddie Mercury crossed with Trent Reznor, but in the case of fan favorite "Enjoy the Silence," he's often off the mike, allowing the audience to take over the singing with a couple "come on!"'s in support…

Sony/Legacy's Box Set Series presents this four-disc anthology of country legend Merle Haggard's years with Epic Records. This is the exact same collection that appeared in 2010 in a more concise three-disc version and again features the remastering work of engineer Vic Anesini. Spanning from his 1981 signing with the label to his departure for Curb Records in 1989, the set covers a creatively prolific (if not commercially successful) period for the artist. Following his '70s peak years, his record deal with Epic finally allowed him more creative control over his recordings, making this set something of a more personal showcase for Haggard.
