AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD second release from Lester Young. This time we have included not only a couple of classic Count Basie titles which heavily feature “Pres” at his absolute prime, but also the formidable classic “The Jazz Giants”.

Oysterband's Trawler is a compilation of favorites from the group's previous seven albums, only newly recorded by the present lineup. Essentially, it's like a "covers" album of The Oysterband covering itself. Long one of Britain's prime synthesists of Celtic and rock, and a thorn in the side of purists everywhere, Trawler takes the group's material one step further away from tradition. Hal-An-Tow is a possessed whirligig of sounds; Oxford Girl reconfirms itself as the group's most memorable melody. One has to admit to slight unease with the "rewriting history" aspect of this re-recording, and a compilation of the original versions would have been far more comfortable.

To coincide with the electronica revolution of the late '90s, Bill Laswell remixed a number of Bob Marley records as ambient dub for the Dreams of Freedom: Ambient Translations of Bob Marley in Dub album. If these songs were remixed by any other producer, the results could have been disastrous, but Laswell is one of the masters of intellectual dub – he knows what to take out and what to add, creating a spacious, cavernous mix that is provocative without being extreme. Some longtime Marley fans will balk at the very idea of the album, but the results are undeniably impressive, even if it's a little too restrained and cerebral to qualify as first-rate ambient dub for clubs.

Very popular during Chopin’s lifetime, the waltzes have long been a favourite with professionals and amateurs alike. Highly virtuosic - most of them were clearly not intended to be danced - and sometimes melancholy, they nevertheless retain the distinctive lightness and grace that we associate with the genre. These pieces have accompanied François Chaplin since his early days as a pianist. After so many years spent playing them, looking beyond their apparent simplicity and fathoming the depths of their poetry, this lifelong admirer of Chopin brings together here, on this magnificent recording - ten years after his complete Nocturnes - the composer’s 19 Waltzes. This complete and continuous reading enables us to perceive them as a whole, stunningly beautiful and full of verve.

Christian Li walks in the footsteps of Mendelssohn, bringing the music from his travels around Europe to life. Recorded with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, we follow Mendelssohn’s own journeys, with pieces written in Leipzig, Düsseldorf, Munich, Venice & London, including music from the composer’s own inspirations and contemporaries: J. S. Bach, Mozart & Schubert.

The contents are culled from highlights off of the double-LP Out Here (1969) and follow-up False Start (1970) - the last projects to feature the second lineup with mainstay Lee (rhythm guitar/lead vocals/piano) backed by Frank Fayad (bass) and George Suranovich (drums) with Jay Donnellan (lead guitar), followed by Gary Rowles (lead guitar). There are several numbers with the combo laying down a heavy "mod" blues and boogie. Namely, the False Start tracks "Stand Out" and "The Everlasting First." The former being a one-off live cut and the latter centering on the presence and contributions of Jimi Hendrix (guitar). The compact and quirky "I Still Wonder," "Nice to Be," and "You Are Something" are evocations of Lee's singular songwriting skills and hearken back to Love's formative sound…
