Since the early '90s Belfast guitar whiz Gary Moore has returned again and again to the blues, leaving his metal phase far behind. Old New Ballads Blues is exactly what the title says it is, a mix of old blues (covers of songs by Elmore James, Willie Dixon, and Otis Rush), new blues (five Moore originals), ballads (half the album) and, well, blues (by one definition or another, everything here passes for blues). The real surprise is that the strongest songs are the original Moore-penned ballads, as Moore gives powerful and atmospheric performances (both vocally and as a guitarist) on "Gonna Rain Today," "No Reason to Cry," and a solid horn-augmented remake of one of his best songs, "Midnight Blues," from what is easily his best album, 1990s million-selling Still Got the Blues.

A beautiful tribute to Compendium Records – first a store, then an important label in Norway during the 70s – home to a wicked range of jazz and progressive rock sounds! Compendium's store had a great reputation for bringing in imports from the UK and beyond – especially some of the more important leftfield artists of those crucial early 70s underground years. So when the label got its start, it was actually with a Henry Cow album – before then branching out into work from some local talents, and some important jazz rock material as well. The package is very nicely done – words and images of the store and label at their height – with tracks that include "Oslo" by Henry Cow, "Watching Everybody Else" by Blow Out, "Spanish Knee" by Hugh Hopper, "Street Talk" by Vanessa, "Steam" by Karin Krog & Archie Shepp, "Peace In The World" by Charles Austin & Joe Gallivan, "Come Down" by Saluki, and "Seven Drones" by Hopper, Dean, Tippett, & Gallivan

Beethoven composed his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies more or less simultaneously during the years 1804-8, and they were both first performed in a memorable all-Beethoven concert in December 1808 that also featured the Fourth Piano Concerto (with Beethoven performing at the piano for the last time in public), the Choral Fantasy, and some other works. Despite being composed together, the Fifth and Sixth inhabit very different musical worlds. The fifth is a marvel of terse, dramatic writing, whereas the Sixth is more leisurely, frankly programmatic, and celebrates the glories of nature and the countryside.

The shear breadth and diversity of artists gathered for this benefit project, Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams, is a tribute to the affection Victoria Williams' peers had for her. It conveniently also makes for heady listening for any fan of contemporary music. The hard, brittle edges of Soul Asylum ("Summer of Drugs") and Buffalo Tom ("Merry Go Round") stand shoulder to shoulder with the country-folk of Lucinda Williams ("Main Road") and Maria McKee (an inspired and riveting "Opelousas (Sweet Relief)"). Sweet Relief offers a unique opportunity to introduce yourself to an enduring songwriter while savoring some of the day's most intriguing musicians. How sweet it is!

He started out with Elvis Presley on the Sun label and jumped from rockabilly stardom to the status of a country legend. Johnny Cash began performing concerts at prisons starting in the late 1950s. Although Cash cultivated a romantic outlaw image, he never served a prison sentence. Cash's record, "Folsom Prison Blues", made the country Top 5. His "I Walk the Line" became No. 1 on the country charts and entered the pop charts Top 20. "Home of the Blues" followed, recorded in July 1957. That same year, Cash became the first Sun artist to release a long-playing album. His single "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" became one of his biggest hits.

The seeds for the La De Das THE HAPPY PRINCE were sown very early on in 1967, long before Pete Townsend's TOMMY and Ray Davies' ARTHUR were even conceived, unfortunately it would be two years before it was finally released.Band members Bruce Howard and Trevor Wilson were talking of a rock opera as early as 1966 and started writing material early in 1967. The project was temporarily put on hold while the band left New Zealand in May '67 to hopefully conquer the Aussie scene. The La De Das eventually talked EMI Australia into recording THE HAPPY PRINCE album in January 1969. Finally released in April 1969 to unanimously excellent reviews, it was only a moderate seller at the time. This album is comprised of two versions of THE HAPPY PRINCE - one version is without Adrian Rawlins' narration in an attempt to show how the album might have sounded as a collection of songs.

Before you do anything else with Flash, drop the needle on the last half of “Ambitious,” the album’s chug-a-funk leadoff track. Just as singer Jimmy Hall steps back from the song’s skeletal tune and jackhammer rhythm with a Tarzanlike “yeah!” Jeff Beck’s guitar suddenly shoots up into the mix like a runaway jet, cutting a reckless path through Nile Rodgers’ spit ‘n’ polish production with sawtooth distortion and heat-ray feedback. Then, in a daredevil display of rock-guitar heroics that recalls Jimi Hendrix on Electric Ladyland in his full pyrotechnic glory, Beck yanks his guitar up and down flights of freakish harmonic steps, executes breathtaking suicide dives with his vibrato bar, and claws away at the song’s core riff with angry trills and harsh, scraping leads.

Albums like this are why CD reissues exist and why Wounded Bird are so important. There are handfulls of classics from the jazz-funk-R&B world in the 70's and 80's that are definately lost classics and many with huge commercial potencial that never came close to getting it.Narada Michael Walden's 1982 date 'Confidance' is among them.
