Anne-Sophie Mutter performs all of Mozart's mature Violin Sonatas in these films from Munich's Gasteig concert hall. "… vital, dynamic playing with a wide range of colours … a real sense of the music's melancholy and intellectual depths … from the great violinist" (Süddeutsche Zeitung). "Such was the ease of Mutter's and Orkis's dispatch of every opening movement that the oasis at the heart of each sonata became a place of real refreshment" (The Times).

UK collection. The music of Bobby Fuller was an anachronism: a recollection of simpler times set in the fast-paced world of tomorrow. Cast within the tenets of his twin loves, the instrumental surf sound and his idol Buddy Holly, Fuller existed in a moment when all of popular music was rapidly changing. Like Holly, his life was cut short in his early 20s with so much of what he promised artistically unanswered. Although revisionists have unfairly favored Fuller's more primitive demos and independent releases made in El Paso, Texas over the glossier recordings created by producer Bob Keane in Hollywood, they may be missing the beauty of what these two created together: a perfect blend of power and Polish. This collection is the first time all of Bobby Fuller's singles have been made available in their original mono single versions.

Vienna’s music scene at the end of the 18th century was home to many renowned composers, including Paul Wranitzky, who was a respected colleague of Mozart and Haydn and was frequently tasked with providing incidental music for the considerable number of newly written plays. The three pieces heard on this album demonstrate not only Wranitzky’s compositional diversity but a gift for symphonically conceived works featuring battle music, solemn polyphonic elements, and the popular Turkish style with its characteristic janissary percussion.

After nearly 10 years as Argo, the name of Chess Records’ jazz imprint was supposed to be the only thing about it that changed. But as Cadet Records assumed its new identity in the mid-’60s, the influence of the dawning psychedelic era, a boom of recording technology advances and, crucially, the arrival of a cadre of eager artists and brilliant producers put the label on a new, bewildering course to greatness. Tragic circumstances would bring about the label’s unraveling almost as rapidly as its meteoric rise, but not before Cadet released some of most audacious, boundary-pushing jazz, soul, blues and rock albums of the ’60s and ’70s — music that’s inspired generations of superstars, DJs and cratediggers ever since.

Both the term symphonic poem and the form itself were invented by Franz Liszt, who in works such as Les Préludes (1848; after Alphonse de Lamartine’s Méditations poétiques) used thematic transformation to parallel the poetic emotions. That’s true again with Byron (Tasso, lamento e trionfo), Schiller (Die Ideale) and Victor Hugo (Mazeppa). A winning quartet!

These are the only concertos that Haydn wrote for himself to play: by his own admission ‘no great wizard’ on any instrument, nonetheless these agreeably tuneful early works show how Haydn’s nascent style was gaining shape and symphonic aspiration beyond the simple charm of Mozart’s superficially similar Church sonatas.

When talking about bossa nova, perhaps the signature pop music sound of Brazil, frequently the first name to come to one's lips is that of Antonio Carlos Jobim. This compilation comprises four of J. Gilberto's first records: his two first Brazilian-issued records (João Gilberto - Chega De Saudade and João Gilberto - O Amor, O Sorriso E A Flor); three songs taken from his first 45rpm record (João Gilberto - Cantando As Músicas Do Film Orfeu Do Carnaval); as well as his third American-issued record (João Gilberto - The Boss Of The Bossa Nova).

These are both delightful symphonies, even if the Eight is rather thickly scored. However, Alexander Anissimov does his best to make the textures as clear and well ventilated as possible, and pays great attention to details of dynamics and balance. Try the Scherzo of the Fifth Symphony and you will find much lightness of touch and a greater transparency than is often encountered in records of these works. Strongly recommended. –Penguin Guide

Now here's a cover album with a few interesting angles to it - First there is the fact that Matthews Southern Comfort have a, let's call it: Woodstock history - Well over 6 million spotify streams confirm the legendary status of Matthews Southern Comfort's global hit. And of course: although this collection is called the Woodstock Album, the song itself is not featured on this album as it was written post festival and therefor never performed at Mac Yasgur's farm. In 2022 MSC were looking for a way to reactivate the band as a viable and touring unit again. The concept they came up with was a Matthews Southern Comfort re-interpretation of songs that were all performed at the Festival by artists like Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix, John Sebastian and The Grateful Dead. The songs very much speak for themselves, as do these new versions with a distinct Matthews Southern Comfort signature.

With Bitter Sweet Blues, Gaye Adegbalola has produced an album that starts off where her work with Saffire the Uppity Blues Women left off, and jumps into a new, adventurous space. An expanded cast of musicians and more personal lyrics are some of the benefits to going solo, and Adegbalola makes use of both well. Each song has either humor or power, sometimes both. The only thing that seems incongruous is the mixture of songs with wildly varying moods and topics. While satirical woman-power songs like "Big Ovaries" are empowering and funny, when paired with "Nightmare" – a powerful, personal song about child molestation – the effect is somewhat gross. The feminist politics of both songs mesh rather well, but it is difficult for the listener to shift from laughing at bawdy sexuality to somber empathy in just a few tracks. Overall, though, this is a fine first solo effort that resonates with spirit and emotion.

Since September 2009, they have been touring throughout Texas and Oklahoma as well as the Midwest and the Southeast. The band's sophomore release, Firewater, ups the ante and solidifies Whiskey Myers as the genre-blending diamond in the rough, whose music has captured the attention of fans and critics alike. Produced by Leroy Powell, former guitarist for Shooter Jennings, and recorded at the famed Panhandle House in Denton, TX.

There may never be a setting as beautiful or a locale as ideal as a breathtaking ocean view complete with the sounds of beautiful Latin jazz floating over the ocean breeze. The fifth CD in the Colors of Latin Jazz series sets the scene for a collection of contemporary, smooth jazz peppered with Latin rhythms and percussion. This CD is a musical hybrid that's at once cool and smooth, yet hot and spicy! Up first is Jeff Linsky's beauty "Up Late," originally issued on Up Late by Concord Picante. His dynamic colors beckon the listener to "Come With Me," the second track sung and scatted by the inimitable Tania Maria on a cool samba just right for a hot day or night. Another smooth scorcher, "San Sabastian" by Ed Calle with special guest Arturo Sandoval is some of Sandoval's most melodic sax work bordered on all sides by the beauty of Spanish guitar, brass, and strings.
