Albedo 0.39 is a studio album by the Greek electronic composer Vangelis, released in 1976. It was the second album produced by Vangelis in Nemo Studios, London, which was his creative base until the late 1980s. It was his first Top 20 UK album. It is a concept album themed around space physics (the reflection of light i.e. physical truth). Its title is inspired by the idea of a planet's albedo, the proportion of the light it receives that is reflected back into space. The album title refers to the average albedo value of the planet Earth as it was in 1976. From the explanation on the back of the LP cover : "The reflecting power of a planet or other non-luminous body. A perfect reflector would have an Albedo of 100%. The Earth's Albedo is 39%, or 0.39". It was performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1977. The album reached #18 on the UK Album Charts.

Recorded in 1976 and released the next year, Body Love, Vol. 2 was intended as a soundtrack for a pornographic film. Nothing wrong with this in and of itself, but it is hard to imagine that Schulze's trance-inducing electronic improvisations would be considered an appropriate soundtrack for sex. "Nowhere - Now Here" has a basic beat and spacy synths, but after 18 minutes, when the harpsichord solo starts, the simple prog rock absurdity of it shows that Schulze isn't taking his assignment too seriously. The dubbed-out introduction to "Stardancer II" shows a different side of Schulze's muse, but as it gets interesting, the regular synths start up and things return to normal. "Moogetique" is an atmospheric closer, 12 minutes of slowly undulating synths and ambient echoes…

This month's offering covers a wide range of time and expression. The Other Morning was recorded live just a few days ago, Jan 22 at the Timehouse main studio. Many days will start with a spontaneous moment when the gear has been on for days and pieces are evolving and melting away and much is captured in these moments. This was centered around the large format modular system, along with the Oberheim TEO 5 synth, the resonate sequences are emanating from this.

2350 Broadway (1993) is the first in a series recorded by Namlook and Tetsu Inoue. The first half is rather too short on tones and melody but the second disc, consisting of the 70-minute epic "Hands Of Light" is a masterful exercise in deep spacemusic. It's glacial pace varies only marginally between beatless and gently pulsed and its mix of electronic drones, wind effects and melodies is deceptively simple.
2350 Broadway 2 (1994) is a seminal, almost fabled release spanning two CDs and recorded by Namlook and Tetsu Inoue in real time (no pre- or post-production and no overdubs). Remarkably engaging for its simplicity, the set was subsequently reissued by popular demand and spawned a pair (and counting) of follow-ups in the series…

Tangerine Dream has never produced anything calculated to make the masses jump off their chairs and start screaming Top 40 tunes, but they have managed to have an immense impact in the world of Electronic and soundtrack music. Their studio, live and soundtrack releases have their own driving hypnotic pieces that might differ from release to release, but they are all uniquely Tangerine Dream. The Ric Ocasek-produced Why Be Blue?, originally released on Break Out in 1992, is notable for its upbeat temperament (the title isn't ironic) and its display of Alan Vega and Martin Rev at a point in their career when they were neither ahead of nor with the times. Despite "Mujo"'s resemblance to Peaches & Herb's "Shake Your Groove Thing" (a disco reference, very out-of-place for 1992 music that wasn't house or shiny dance-pop) and the mid-'80s sophisti-pop melodic structure of "Flashy Love" (it could almost be an ABC cover), they weren't exactly behind the times. They were somewhere else entirely, if vaguely in line with the groups that continued to look to Suicide's past work for guidance.

In Blue is a double CD from the great Klaus Schulze. This set has almost 160 minutes of pure "Klaustrophobia." That means that these three long-form compositions are full of sequences, dense atmospheres, and drawn-out synth washes. Schulze invited Manuel Göttsching, his former Ash Ra Tempel partner, to play guitar on one of the compositions, "Return of the Tempel." Each of the compositions has several movements, each relating to blue - the color or the mood. Schulze is in rare form on this set. It has textures and timbres of minimalism. The sequences are gentle and subtle. It had been four years since Schulze had done a regular studio album and this - after a Wahnfried disc, a classical CD, an opera, and a live release - is refreshing. He shows that he is just as adept at ambient as he is at the Berlin school.
