Swiss pianist and composer Sylvie Courvoisier has been a defining figure on the contemporary jazz scene for 20 years and is at the epicentre of the New York music scene. Having just been awarded the prestigious Swiss Grand Prize for Music 2025, she now presents her duo album with the legendary Wadada Leo Smith. This follows the recent acclaimed release of her solo album To Be Other-Wise and the atmospherically multi-layered sextet album Chimaera. An exceptional musician, Smith is always at the pulse of the times, celebrating musical diversity and creativity and speaks out against any labelling of his work. He has helped shape the development of music in various contexts over the last 50 years. The Life of a Showgirl is the upcoming twelfth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It is scheduled for release on October 3, 2025, through Republic Records. Swift created the album during the European leg of the Eras Tour in 2024, inspired by her life as an entertainer. She described it as a vibrant and lively project, departing from the bleak lyricism of its predecessor, The Tortured Poets Department (2024). Swift wrote and produced The Life of a Showgirl with the producers Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden, working with the duo for the first time since Reputation (2017). It contains 12 songs, including the lead single, "The Fate of Ophelia". The American singer Sabrina Carpenter is featured on the album's title track. Photographed by Mert and Marcus, Swift adopted a provocative, showgirl-inspired theme for the album, which journalists described as the most glamorous and flamboyant visual aesthetic of her career.

2012 album from Yoko Ono and 1/2 of Sonic Youth. This is NYC avant-garde convergence at its finest. The idea of a meeting between Yoko, Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore is so perfect, so obvious, the only shock is that it didn't happen earlier. Recorded in 2011 at Manhattan's Sear Sound, the album features lead vocals by Yoko, with backing vocals and guitars by Kim and Thurston. It's a wild collision of song-form, poetics, free-rock and classic glossolalic ecstasy. Yoko has not allowed herself to sound this raw since the earliest recordings of the Plastic Ono Band. There's a remarkably empathic and comfortable quality to the sound. The three communicate as though they'd been playing together forever.

The title of Many Bright Things' third album highlights the nature of the project: a large cast of friends coalescing around guitarist Stan Denski. After a seven-year gap, Denski – better known by now as the compiler for QDK Media's high-profile series of obscure psychedelia, Love, Peace & Poetry – delivers an entertaining disc of spaced-out jams. Many Bright Friends combines the folky side of Jefferson Airplane ("Minor Parade for 18 Strings," the title track, "There Will Be a Slight Delay") and the crudest grooves of the Krautrock school. The album is structured around two main tracks. The first one is "East West," a 21-minute cover of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's anthem to cross-pollination. Featured in this orgiastic jam are guitarists Denski, Nick Saloman, Daniel Noland, and Al Simones (trading solos); Vess Ruthenberg (bass); Steve Obenreder (drums); and harp player Byrd Birocco, who steals the show. "I Am Not a Collector Potato," the other key track here, is a feature for Jello Biafra, who tells listeners what collecting psychedelic records used to be like (with plenty of reverb in the voice), over a quiet groove improvised by Denski, Larry Demyer (guitar), David "Tufty" Clough (bass), and Lon Paul Elrich (percussion).

On October 5th, we celebrate the centenary of conductor and choir director Jürgen Jürgens, a leading figure among the new generation of early music explorers after the Second World War. Founder of the Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg in the 1950s, he distinguished himself through his pioneering concerts and recordings devoted to the Italian composer, who was little known and poorly served on disc at the time. This recording of the Vespers is one of the first major versions of this important work. It was recorded with the assistance of Concentus Musicus Wien, which featured Herbert Tachezi, Gustav Leonhardt, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt, with whom Jürgens collaborated closely on this disc (the former taking charge of the instrumental arrangements, the latter of the critical work on the score). The vocal soloists include Max von Egmond and Nigel Rogers.

The two albums enclosed in At Town Hall/The Amazing Nina Simone bookend the remarkable summer of 1959 in the career of Nina Simone, when she recorded a studio session, The Amazing Nina Simone, in May, and in September appeared At Town Hall in a superlative performance that was recorded and soon issued. Just 26, Simone displayed great assurance, especially on the live date, casting off the cloak of the vocal jazz/standards singer and performing with her own trio featuring her lively piano. The studio date features an orchestra, but it too finds her early on in her recording career stamping her voice on standards "Willow Weep for Me" and "Blue Prelude".

Unhalfbricking is the third album by British folk rock band Fairport Convention, released in 1969. It is seen as a transitional album in their history and marked a further musical move away from American influences towards more traditional English folk songs that had begun on their previous album, What We Did On Our Holidays and arguably reached its peak on the follow-up, Liege & Lief, released later the same year. In 2004 Q magazine placed Unhalfbricking at number 41 in its list of the 50 Greatest British Albums Ever, and in the same year The Observer, describing it as "a thoroughly English masterpiece", listed it at number 27 in its Top 100 British Albums. The following year, 2005, it was included in Robert Dimery's "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".

The three works on this recording bear witness to the changes that took place at the dawn of musical modernism. The reappraisal and reinterpretation of traditional musical genres and innovations led to new ways of organising and addressing the harmonic, melodic, timbral and rhythmic elements of music. Polish composer Karol Szymanowski developed a highly personal musical language that prioritises tone colour, an approach that is perfectly suited to the triptych Mythes, inspired by legends from ancient Greece. Here he developed a new mode of expression, a fusion of the violin and the piano into a single entity with the use of extended violin techniques.
