Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances are some of the greatest treasures ever composed for piano four hands. Prior to their publication, Dvořák’s fame had been limited to Prague, where he was based. On publication, however, the dances were a resounding success, propelling the composer almost overnight onto the international music scene. This success was the result of a series of strange and happy coincidences. In 1874, Dvořák, who was no longer a young man, applied for and was granted the State Scholarship for Artists by the Ministry of Education in Vienna. This meant that he was, at the age of 33, financially independent for the first time in his life. The scholarship could be renewed on an annual basis. 1877 was to be another landmark year for Dvořák. That year, Johannes Brahms was on the jury assessing candidates for the scholarship. He was so impressed by the compositions Dvořák submitted to the jury that he immediately recommended his Moravian Duets to Fritz Simrock,Brahms’ publisher in Berlin. Simrock was not only grateful for the recommendation; it also gave him a wonderful business idea, which he put to the Bohemian composer in a letter dated 6 March 1878: “I would like to ask you whether you would be inclined to write a certain number, let’s say two volumes, of ‘Bohemian’ or ’Moravian’ dances for piano four hands (along the lines of the ’Hungarian’ ones by Brahms) using original national melodies that seem suitable and would be permeated by and combined with your own ideas? Looking at your duets, it seems to me that you would know how to make them especially attractive, artistically attractive, I mean.“ Dvořák was delighted and perplexed in equal measure by the request, which promised considerable prestige. While Brahms (and before him Franz Liszt for his Hungarian Rhapsodies) were indeed able to draw on printed collections of ‘Hungarian’ melodies, no such thing existed for ‘Bohemian’ and ’Moravian’ music. What Simrock could not have known was that the melodies in the Moravian Duets had been made up entirely by the composer.
