Dreaming Out Loud finds Michael Chapman in fine form, turning a record that isn't drastically dissimilar from his early work. While it doesn't have the spark of his early albums for Harvest, it has a professional journeyman quality that is appealing in its own way. Chapman plays most of the instruments on the album himself, which can occasionally give the music a stilted feel, but on the whole, it's an ambitious, successful effort that fits nicely into his body of work.Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic.com
One of Michael Chapman's lesser-known but very atmospheric albums. His voice has a certain quality to it, which was typical of this period in his career; maybe he was in a more reflective mood, but his vocals have an even grittier edge than usual.
As far as I am concerned, this man never has and never will make a bad album. This one picks up your spirits and rides them into a most glorious sunset at the end of track 11, and you just have to press 'Play' to enjoy it all over again.
If you're a guitarist, Chapman is most definitely one of the player's who should be on your list to listen to, his fingerpicking and style are unique and well worth studying.
Every track on here is an absolute winner, and I think this was the first outing for the beautiful 'Fool In The Night,' and this version on here just has an edge on the others. Catch him live if you can, he's still on the circuit and quite jaw-dropping to experience.
