This disc brings to a conclusion Joseph Banowetz's admirable survey of Rubinstein's complete music for piano and orchestra for Marco Polo. The Fifth Concerto (dating from 1874) is by far the most monumental, both in terms of duration it spans some 46 minutes—and in the virtuosic demands that it places on any pianist brave enough to undertake a performance. Like the Fourth, which was taken into the repertoire of Josef Hofmann the Fifth also found a legendary advocate in Josef Lhevinne, who included it in his sensational American debut concert with Safanov and the Russian Symphony Orchestra in New York in 1906.
Its demise since then has been our loss, for although it certainly has its flaws (its length being one) there is still a great deal to admire, not least its abundance of warmly lyrical melodies. Like the Henselt Concerto I reviewed in August last year, the technical difficulties of the solo part may largely account for the concerto's absence from the repertoire (the work is dedicated to the high priest of super-virtuosity, Alkan, and contains chordal spans of gigantic proportions); but there is certainly more to this work than mere showy virtuosity. Readers may remember Adrian Ruiz's magisterial recording of this concerto on the Genesis label from the early 1970s (nla), and I am pleased to report that Banowetz's account is every bit its equal, and in many places superior—to my mind he gives a much tighter and more controlled reading.
"Caprice russe was composed four years after the Fifth Concerto and is a single concertante work based on three Russian folk-songs whose origins, as Banowetz writes, are somewhat dubious. Judging by his brilliant and engaging performance Banowetz clearly has a good deal of faith in the piece, though I have to say that compared to the Fifth Concerto the material seems far less immediate and memorable. However, its rarity value and, what is more important, the rarity value of the concerto make this a disc that can be thoroughly recommended to collectors of obscure romantic repertoire.
