The first 14 of the 16 symphonies chosen span the years 1771, when Mozart was 15, through to 1773, when he produced in the G minor No. 26, his first out-and-out masterpiece among the symphonies. In addition to the regularly numbered works Tate includes the so-called Symphonies Nos. 48 (adapted from the overture to Ascanio in Alba) and 50 (adapted from the overture to Il sogno di Scipione). Then, almost as an appendix to the rest, come two more adaptations from opera overtures, dating from 1775-6, No. 51 (from La finta giardiniera) and No. 52 (from Il re pastore, with an adaptation of an aria inserted).
Though the titling “1771-1776” on the box is strictly accurate it implies something rather different from what is offered, even if one can readily justify the addition of the opera-overture adaptations on grounds of musical quality. Incidentally, none of those extras is included in either the Mackerras set (ten discs) or the Levine (11 discs). Whatever the rationale, this is a most attractive collection of 16 works conveniently brought together in a three-disc box which is more manageable than the bigger collections. Robin Golding provides in compact format highly informative notes on each work, though not surprisingly he shies away from explaining the choice.
Comparing Tate with Mackerras, one can broadly say that Tate is lighter and sweeter, often more elegant, helped by less immediate, less bright sound. Though there are plenty of exceptions, outer movements tend to be a little faster, central movements rather slower, so that the Andantino grazioso second movement of No. 22 is sufficiently expansive to allow the most warmly expressive playing of the oboe solo by Gordon Hunt, rightly credited in the booklet. In the Andantino of No. 52 (the transcription of Aminta’s aria from Il re pastore) Neil Black is similarly credited for his oboe solo. Levine on DG is generally heavier than either, though always fresh and lively. Unlike both Tate and Mackerras he does not give the alternative slow movement of No. 19, though as he observes both repeats in the regular Andante and adopts a slow speed, that movement alone lasts over ten minutes. Levine is regularly more generous with repeats whether in slow or outer movements.
