Gabriela’s extraordinary ability as an improviser, rare in the classical world, is fast becoming her trademark. The passion, poetic musicality and sense of structure Gabriela brings to classical works translate to her classy improvisations. And no matter how complex the variations, the original melody always emerges triumphantly from a musical tapestry that might weave blues, jazz, tango, Bach or Debussy into a multihued framework. Such a skill for improvisation – to blend a vast range of styles – makes Gabriela an extremely rare talent. In “Baroque” Gabriela takes some of the best known Baroque themes, including Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, Albinoni’s Adagio, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Boccherini’s Minuet and Handel’s Water Music, and brings to her classy improvisations the same passion, poetic musicality and sense of structure that she brings to classical works.

Gabriela Montero - Baroque: Improvisations (2007)

‘Is she for real?’ one might ask on reading the liner-note to this CD. Gabriela Montero claims every piece was created on the spot: all are improvisations arising out of the ‘white void’ she inhabits when letting her pianistic mind roam free. Having once put her to the test myself, when she was less famous then she is today, I can vouch for the authenticity of her improvisations: whatever idea you lob at her, each piece emerges miraculously fully-fledged – a real composition. And thus it is here. Vivaldi’s ‘Autumn’ becomes a Brubeckian scamper, his ‘Summer’ a firework display in the manner of the Cuban maestro Ruben Gonzalez; Pachelbel’s ‘Canon’ is transformed into a dreamily Schumannesque rumination, while Handel’s ‘Hallelujah’ chorus becomes Bizet crossed with Scott Joplin. There’s a lot of Bach hovering in the background, with Handel’s famous ‘Sarabande’ given a spaciously Bach-Busoni feel. Occasionally she descends to noodling with a whiff of Richard Clayderman, but for the most part this CD is a brilliantly original display based on a superb keyboard technique. For Beethoven and Liszt, classical improvisation was a serious art: this statuesque Venezuelan proves the art is not lost.

Review by BBC Music Magazine

Judging from her booklet-notes, Gabriela Montero holds her carefree, unplanned, “take one” improvisational modus operandi dear. Yet much of her third CD devoted to improvisations benefits from her growing focus and discipline on all fronts. She's largely conquered her earlier tendency to rush fast tempi in the heat of creation; the concise and balanced opening selection Canarios is a winning case in point. The easy lyrical flow of Montero's revamped Pachelbel Canon attests to the pianist's new-found (and very welcome) sense of space (that is, what to leave out as well as what to include). Handel's Hornpipe takes an imaginatively wrought detour through Rachmaninov's church bells, while Montero whips Vivaldi's “Summer” and “Winter” concertos from The Four Seasons into a dazzling and succinct toccata.

Like all improvisers regardless of style, Montero has her pet licks, and her over-dependence on slow left-hand ostinati sometimes blurs that thin line between effective decoration and cocktail noodling, as a rhapsodic tome based on Albinoni's Adagio bears out. But if you want a truly puerile habanera guaranteed even to make a mediocre dance-class accompanist cringe, check out what Montero does with Handel's Hallelujah Chorus's main theme. Take two, anybody?
