Collection includes 5 studio albums by Culture Club, 7 studio albums by Boy George and also one general compilation.

Few new wave groups were as popular as Culture Club. During the early '80s, the group racked up seven straight Top Ten hits in the U.K. and six Top Ten singles in the U.S. with their light, infectious pop-soul. Though their music was radio-ready, what brought the band stardom was Boy George, the group's charismatic, cross-dressing lead singer. George dressed in flamboyant dresses and wore heavy makeup, creating a disarmingly androgynous appearance that created a sensation on early MTV. George also had a biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club heavy media exposure in both America and Britain. Although closely aligned with the new romantics – they were both inspired by Northern soul and fashion – Culture Club had sharper pop sense than their peers and they consequently had a broader appeal. However, their time in the spotlight was brief. Not only could they not withstand the changing fashions of MTV, but the group was fraught with personal tensions, including Boy George's drug addiction. By 1986, the group had broken up, leaving behind several singles that rank as classics of the new wave era.

The son of a boxing club manager, Boy George (b. George O'Dowd, June 14, 1961), found himself attracted to the glam rock of T. Rex and David Bowie as a teenager. During the post-punk era of the late '70s, he became a regular at London new romantic clubs. Along with his cross-dressing friends Marilyn and Martin Degville (a future member of Sigue Sigue Sputnik), George became well-known around the London underground for his extravagant sense of style, and Malcolm McLaren invited him to join an early version of Bow Wow Wow. George briefly appeared with the band as Lieutenant Lush before leaving to form In Praise of Lemmings with bassist Mikey Craig (b. February 15, 1960). Once guitarist Jon Suede joined the group, they changed their name to Sex Gang Children. Within a few months, the band met Jon Moss (b. September 11, 1957), a professional drummer who had previously played with Adam & the Ants and the Damned.

By 1981, Boy George had renamed the group Culture Club and Suede had been replaced by Roy Hay (b. August 12, 1961), a former member of Russian Bouquet. Toward the end of the year, they recorded a set of demos for EMI, but the label turned them down. Early in 1982, the band landed a contract with Virgin Records, releasing "White Boy" in the spring. Neither "White Boy" or its follow-up, "I'm Afraid of Me," made the charts but the British music and fashion press began running articles about Boy George. In the fall, Culture Club released their breakthrough single, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," which rocketed to the top of the charts. Shortly afterward, the band's debut, Kissing to Be Clever, climbed to number five on the U.K. charts and the non-LP single "Time (Clock of the Heart)" reached number three. Early in 1983, Kissing to Be Clever and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" began climbing the U.S. charts, with the single peaking at number two. "Time" reached number two in the U.S. shortly after the non-LP British single "Church of the Poison Mind," attained the same position in the U.K. "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" became a Top Ten hit in America that summer.

By the time Culture Club's second album Colour By Numbers was released in the fall of 1983, the band was the most popular pop/rock group in America and England. "Karma Chameleon" became a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic, while the album reached number one in the U.K. and number two in the U.S. Throughout 1984, the group racked up hits, with "It's a Miracle" and "Miss Me Blind" reaching the Top Ten. In the fall, the group returned with its third album, Waking Up With the House on Fire. While "The War Song" reached number two in the U.K., the album was a disappointment in America, stalling at platinum; its predecessor went quadruple platinum.

Following a brief tour in February, Culture Club went on hiatus for 1985, with Craig, Moss, and Hay pursuing extracurricular musical projects in the interim. During the year, Boy George – who had previously denounced drugs in public – became addicted to heroin. Furthermore, his romance with Moss, which had always been rocky, began to disintegrate. All of these problems were kept hidden, but it became evident that something was wrong when Culture Club returned to action in the spring of 1986. Though their comeback single, "Move Away," became a hit in April, its accompanying album From Luxury to Heartache stayed on the charts for only a few months. Rumors of George's heroin addiction began to circulate, and by the summer, he announced that he was indeed addicted to the drug. In July, he was arrested by the British police for possession of cannabis. Several days later, keyboardist Michael Rudetski, who played on From Luxury to Heartache, was found dead of a heroin overdose in George's home. Rudetski's parents unsuccessfully tried to press wrongful death charges on Boy George.

While Boy George was battling heroin addiction, and his subsequent dependence on prescription narcotics, Culture Club broke up. George confirmed the group's disbandment in the spring of 1987, and he began a solo career later that year. While his solo career produced several dance hits in Europe, George didn't land an American hit until 1992, when his cover of Dave Berry's "The Crying Game" was featured in the Academy Award-nominated film of the same name. In 1995, George published his autobiography, Take It Like a Man. Culture Club reunited in 1998, issuing the two-disc set VH1 Storytellers/Greatest Hits.

Kissing to Be Clever is the album that put Culture Club on the musical map. Incorporating pop, rock, dance, new wave, soul, and Caribbean rhythms (an amalgamation of "cultures"), the result was a soulful, progressive pop outing that scored several landmark international hits and made a star out of the band's outrageous frontman, Boy George. A couple of tracks were European dance hits, but the first "official" single, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," was a simple masterpiece, resonating with an ache that harked back to the classic torch songs of yesteryear. Most of the other songs were quite different, with energetic beats and sometimes silly, campy themes ("Boy Boy I'm the Boy," "White Boys Can't Control It," and "White Boy"). The album scored two other major hits, the zippy and bouncy "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" and the gorgeous "Time (Clock of the Heart)." However, beware that "Time" is only on certain pressings of the album. When the album was issued on CD, and once the Epic label dissolved, the formerly colorful album cover had turned to black and white, and "Time" had been omitted, which is pretty ridiculous, considering the song was a huge number two hit, and the album was then left with only nine tracks. Still, this set is a highlight of 1980s music, and set the stage for one of the decade's most loved and oft-remembered bands.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Colour by Numbers was Culture Club's most successful album, and, undoubtedly, one of the most popular albums from the 1980s. Scoring no less than four U.S. hit singles (and five overseas), this set dominated the charts for a full year, both in the United States and in Europe. The songs were infectious, the videos were all over MTV, and the band was a media magnet. Boy George sounded as warm and soulful as ever, but one of the real stars on this set was backing vocalist Helen Terry, who really brought the house down on the album's unforgettable first single, "Church of the Poison Mind." This album also featured the band's biggest (and only number one) hit, the irresistibly catchy "Karma Chameleon," its more rock & roll Top Five follow-up "Miss Me Blind," and the fourth single (and big club hit), "It's a Miracle" (which also featured Helen Terry's unmistakable belting). Also here are "Victims," a big, dark, deep, and bombastic power ballad that was a huge hit overseas but never released in the U.S., and other soulful favorites such as "Black Money" and "That's the Way (I'm Only Trying to Help You)," where Boy George truly flexed his vocal muscles. In the 1980s music was, in many cases, flamboyant, fun, sexy, soulful, colorful, androgynous, and carefree, and this album captured that spirit perfectly. A must for any collector of 1980s music, and the artistic and commercial pinnacle of a band that still attracted new fans years later.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Culture Club - Waking Up With The House On Fire (1984) Japanese Remastered Expanded 2008
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 361 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 123 Mb | Scans ~ 129 Mb

The career of Boy George and Culture Club had been on a steady upward climb for two years by the fall of 1984, culminating, as it turned out, with the transatlantic number one success of "Karma Chameleon" and the Colour by Numbers album, which eventually sold four million copies in the U.S. alone. The group had every reason to expect that its third album, Waking Up with the House on Fire, would enjoy similar success, but it was not to be. The leadoff single, "The War Song," with its chorus, "War, war is stupid/And people are stupid/And love means nothing/In some strange quarters," put off many fans, and though it neared the top of the charts in the U.K., it was less successful in the U.S., while the differing follow-up singles, "The Medal Song" in Britain and "Mistake, No. 3" in America, barely made the Top 40. "The War Song" certainly was mistake number one as far as the U.S. was concerned, but the problem may have been less the music on Waking Up, which was typically frothy and propulsive, than the passing of a fad. When Culture Club arrived in the winter of 1982-1983, they were, in essence, a novelty act – the joke was that they had such an "outrageous" image ("silly" would have been a better word) through the clothes and makeup of their lead singer, yet made such conventionally pretty pop music. But novelty has a limited shelf life, and by late 1984, Boy George, in his new flaming red hair and dollar-sign drop earrings on the album cover, had been sideswiped in the image department by Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna, who had upped the ante, especially in terms of sexiness, an area in which he simply couldn't compete, at least among heterosexuals. So, while it's true that Waking Up didn't contain any song as catchy as "Karma Chameleon," the album's real failure was one of timing.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Culture Club - From Luxury To Heartache (1986) Japanese 1st Press
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 394 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 134 Mb | Scans ~ 61 Mb
Label: Toshiba-EMI Ltd | # 32VD-1019 | Time: 00:58:38

For their fourth album, From Luxury to Heartache, Culture Club jettisoned producer Steve Levine in favor of pop/R&B veteran Arif Mardin, seeking to reverse the commercial decline they had suffered with their third album. When the danceable leadoff track, "Move Away," rose into the singles chart, that seemed like a good decision, and the rest of the album followed through with a pronounced drum sound and a relentless beat. The group's flamboyance was played down in an attempt to redefine Culture Club as dancefloor favorites. But previously the group had enjoyed a broad-based pop appeal, and by focusing on one part of their constituency, they ultimately sacrificed the rest. What's more, to make this kind of music, you didn't need a group; all you needed was a lead singer and some synthesizers. No wonder Boy George went solo before the year was out.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Culture Club - Don't Mind If I Do (1999)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 449 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 156 Mb | Scans ~ 105 Mb
Label: Virgin | # 7243 8 48666 2 4 | Time: 01:08:26

Culture Club's first album in 13 years doesn't disappoint on any level, and proves why they were one of the biggest bands of the 1980s. In fact, it's easily their most solid, mature, and focused album. They effortlessly blend together all the musical elements that made them a pop phenomenon, ranging from rock, soul, dance, and reggae to come up with a near perfect pop album. Boy George's vocals are as smoky, torchy ,and seductive as ever, and the band sounds tight and completely in tune with one another. Light reggae influences abound on this set, from the first single "I Just Wanna Be Loved," to the catchy, radio-ready "Maybe I'm a Fool" and the European hit "Your Kisses Are Charity" (which, on the single, featured vocals by Dolly Parton). The album also has its share of soulful, melancholy ballads, including the closer, "Less Than Perfect," which harks back to their Colour by Numbers Euro-hit "Victims," and the masterfully dark "Cold Shoulder," which ranks among the band's best. Then there's the retro-rock of "Sign Language," the irresistible, Latin-tinged dance song "Black Comedy," and their inspired take on the David Bowie classic "Starman." Not only is this a great album from start to finish, it is chock-full of songs which could be easily destined for hit single status. It is truly a mystery why this album was not released in the U.S., given the band's lasting popularity and Boy George's continuous media presence. This set would have easily been a hit, especially during the late-'90s/early-2000s craze for '80s music. A solid, satisfying album through and through.

Boy George teamed up with Lamont Dozier to write many of the songs on his debut album, much of which has a harder dance pop edge than his work with Culture Club. But it's still that bouncy, vulnerable voice, notably on the reggae-tinged hit "Everything I Own," that remains his trademark.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Boy George - Tense Nervous Headache (1988) UK 1st Press
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 408 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 153 Mb | Scans ~ 63 Mb
Label: Virgin | # CDV2546 | Time: 01:06:51

The history of Boy George's second solo album is somewhat confusing and frustrating for fans/collectors. Tense Nervous Headache was released as the follow-up to his brilliant solo debut, Sold, and was released in Japan, England, and parts of Europe. For some reason, Boy George was not happy with the outcome of this album, as he said that the album was over-produced and did not achieve what he wanted. So, he decided to "fix it" before releasing it in North America, where it became known as High Hat, with a different track listing and a slightly different sleeve design. Some of the tracks were remixed by Bobby Z. Still not entirely happy with the finished product, Boy George and Virgin went back in the studio, changed tracks, added several others, altered the sleeve yet again, and produced the album Boyfriend for the European market. The CD version of High Hat became the "official" version released worldwide; however, Europe was treated to this CD (and Japan, where an additional track,"No Clause 28," was added), which has several additional songs compared to the original vinyl. So, after all that work, what about the music? Sadly, this album was not worth the effort. It is muddled, poorly recorded, and rather drab dance music that's missing the soul and excitement of his debut effort. The songs are over-produced and his voice gets lost in the mix. Boy George has one of the most distinctive voices in pop music, and here it merely blends into the rest of the music. There are some highlights, including his great rendition of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted," and the opening tracks, "Don't Cry" and "You Are My Heroin," briefly revisit the glories ofSold. "You Are My Heroin" was especially cheeky given his problems with that particular drug. Overall, a disappointing sophomore effort.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Boy George - High Hat (1989) US 1st Press
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 320 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 118 Mb | Scans ~ 58 Mb

If Culture Club, Boy George's old group, scored surprising across-the-board success with a wild new fashion sense and old-fashioned pop-soul music, as a solo artist Boy George seems determined to address a much smaller, more targeted audience. "I'm here to tell you that the boy's back in town," he declares in "Whether They Like It Or Not," but that song title seems to express his take-it-or-leave-it attitude. Wonder about his scandalous history of addiction and homosexuality? Fine–he gives you songs with titles like "You Are My Heroin" and "You Found Another Guy." Now and then, he returns to the soulfulness of old, notably on the ballad "I'm Not Sleeping Anymore," reminding us that the voice that carried "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is still there. But for the most part The Boy wants to engage in thinly veiled confessions set to new jack swing percussion tracks into which he nearly disappears. Was his future on the dance floor? This album's lack of success suggested not.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

At Worst… The Best Of Boy George And Culture Club (1993)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 483 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 172 Mb | Scans ~ 74 Mb
Label: Virgin | # 7243 8 39014 2 5, VTCD 19 | Time: 01:15:11

The success of "The Crying Game" marked a comeback for Boy George, especially in the U.S., where his solo career had never taken hold beyond the dance clubs, and SBK (distributor of his label, Virgin) took advantage of his resurgence by compiling this 75-minute, 19-track album, which combines his former group Culture Club's biggest hits with selections from his solo work. The ten Culture Club tracks are of a piece, from 1982's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" (which here leads off with an ominous voice intoning, "Popularity breeds contempt") to "Love Is Love," which wasn't a hit but is a better choice than the missing "War Song," which was. The solo tracks are a more mixed batch, and not only because Top 40 U.K. hits like "Keep Me in Mind," "Sold," and "To Be Reborn" are missing. They often rely on loud percussion tracks that strand Boy George's tender tenor somewhere in the distance. He remains most effective on rhythmic ballads, whether "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," "Everything I Own" (his chart-topping first U.K. solo hit), or "The Crying Game."

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Boy George - Cheapness And Beauty (1995)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 346 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 115 Mb | Scans ~ 143 Mb
Label: Virgin | # 7243 8 40492 2 5, CDV 2780 | Time: 00:50:26

Boy George seemed set up by the success of "The Crying Game" to restore his commercial standing, and he certainly made a splash, releasing not only this new album but also his autobiography, Take It Like A Man. The shock here was not so much in the explicitly gay lyrics–he'd sung similar things before–as in the musical style. Previously, George had made music for the dance crowd, but Cheapness And Beauty led off with a screaming guitar rock version of Iggy Pop's "Funtime" (also the album's music video). The next four songs were all hard rockers, too, and although thereafter the album showed greater diversity–"If I Could Fly" was a melodic ballad, "Same Thing In Reverse" a folkie tune with a prominent fiddle–most people only heard the guitar rock, which turned off George's dancefloor constituency and failed to attract a rock listenership. It seemed a shame: If the record company had released "If I Could Fly" as the first single, then followed it with one of the more uptempo, but still pop tracks from the second side, the album might have had a chance. But Virgin wasn't about to work this record; George was dropped by the label shortly after its release. And so, a career that had seemed on the upswing took another dip.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Boy George - The Unrecoupable One Man Bandit. Volume One (1999)
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 262 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 89 Mb | Scans ~ 82 Mb
Label: Black Door Records | # BDCD01/EFA16200-2 | Time: 00:38:50

Quietly released in the middle of the Culture Club reunion, this collection of demos and more or less completed album tracks is something of a semi-sequel to Boy George's underrated Cheapness and Beauty. Featuring the same main collaborator on that record, guitarist John Themis, Bandit is an enjoyable romp through a variety of fun rockers, some more pointedly tongue in cheek than others. A fair number of them were longtime fan favorites via live performances, with George (and the album title) indicating more collections will yet be in the offing. A glammy echo runs throughout the album, however fractured its origins, while a fine cover (with appropriate lyrical alterations) of Bowie's classic anthem "Suffragette City" becomes the icing on the cake. "In Maya" is quite strong, a passionate combination of George's Hindi spiritual beliefs and his admitted commitment to his lover. Side detours from the main path crop up more than once, most notably on "She Was Never He," a touching tribute to drag queens, with a lovely, flamenco-tinged feeling to it. If Themis isn't the most individual guitarist around, he's still got a good way around tunes and is never anything less than enthusiastic with his performances, while the remainder of the core band keeps things going along quite nicely. Nearly all feature some level of George's playful wit, and, as with Beauty, his liner notes explain the origins of each song with spirit (he concludes talking about the lively duet "Spooky Truth" by saying "I think it would be a great song for Cher"). "G.I. Josephine" starts things with a harmonica-and-bagpipes accompanied mock-military march, ripping into the American military "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding homosexuals in the service with fire. "Who Killed Rock and Roll" wraps it up with an inspired trashing of end-of-the century music business standards, specifically dear ol' MTV.

Following a turbulent four years which saw him sentenced to community service for falsely reporting a burglary, denied a Visa for his 2008 North American tour, and more seriously, serve a four-month jail sentence for false imprisonment, troubled '80s star Boy George has spent the last 12 months attempting to remind everyone why he became such a defining pop icon in the first place. After providing vocals for Mark Ronson's Record Collection, the announcement of an impending Culture Club reunion and a critically acclaimed BBC biopic of his early days, his career rehabilitation continues with Ordinary Alien, his first album of new material since 1998's odds-and-sods collection Unrecoupable One Man Bandit, and his first proper studio LP since 1995's Cheapness and Beauty. As its title suggests, it's a collaborative effort with the German producer Kinky Roland, who's worked with George over the last 15 years, and features remixes of some of his noughties material and a host of brand new compositions which are firmly entrenched in George's club DJ roots rather than the David Bowie-influenced rock of its predecessor. Opening track "Turn 2 Dust" an empowering attack on prejudice set against a backdrop of subtle trance hooks, gorgeous twinkling piano chords, and flashes of dub reggae, shows that George hasn't lost his ability to tackle combing tough lyrics with beautiful pop melodies in his 13-year solo exodus. "Yes We Can," a liberating gospel-fused slice of progressive house which samples Barack Obama's famous speech of the same name, "Brand New," a blissful fusion of Chicane-esque dreamy electronica and Vangelis-style neo-classical pop, and "Amazing Grace," an enchanting blend of Eurovision techno and haunting Portuguese fado vocals, which continues to explain why the dance scene has taken George to their hearts, just like the pop world did three decades prior. But just as the four-to-the-floor beats and acidic basslines formula begin to wear a little thin toward the middle of the album, George changes tack for the second half with a more eclectic, genre-straddling sound. The rumbling synths, skittering rhythms, and Philip Something's disengaged Bernard Sumner-ish tones on "Seconds" recall the Chemical Brothers' pulsating "Out of Control"; "Look Pon U" is an infectious blend of warbling subwoofer techno and bouncy dancehall; while the post-punk beats, chunky bass riffs, and quirky electronic effects on the tongue-in-cheek "Kill the A&R" echo the experimental dance-rock of CSS. However, the expletive-laden "Here Come the Girls," not the Ernie K.Doe standard, is a messy attempt at sleazy, Peaches-influenced electro-clash, while "Time Machine," originally a gorgeous understated duet with Amanda Ghost, is turned into a generic floor-filler, as is his pointless cover version of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way." The oxymoronic title of Ordinary Alien, therefore, couldn't be more apt. At times, George could be just another ten-a-penny faceless dance act, and at others, he sounds like he's from another planet. But bar a few self-indulgent missteps, it's good to have him back.

Culture Club & Boy George - Albums Collection 1982-2013 (14CD) [Re-Up]

Boy George - This Is What I Do (2013)

With this album, one of pop's most shape-shifting careers enters a new phase. Boy George has a beard on the cover – a dabble with conventional masculinity that's mischievously offset by discreet eye makeup – and inside is a forceful reclamation of his musical reputation. Before the arrests and the 12-step groups, George's music was often freighted with solipsistic misery; here, on his first all-new studio album since 1995, he's got wisdom on his side. The opening track, King of Everything, apologises for having once thought "self-destruction was so cool" and wonders where he now stands with those he loves. It's a flowing orchestral number, huskily sung: a masterly introduction to the record. His deeper, richer voice has gravitas now – when he maintains, on the countrified It's Easy, that he now leaves heartbreak to others, his burnished tones are utterly authoritative. Live Your Life's old-time reggae and anti-homophobia lyric are closer to his Culture Club beginnings, but he didn't sing this powerfully then. This Is What I Do is the comeback of the year.
