Göteborgs Ungdomskör is definitely one of Sweden’s most prominent Youth Choirs. The choir is conducted by its founder, Anne Johansson, a highly distinguished and multiple times honoured teacher for children in music and singing. The album contains 21 songs devoted to Spring, Summer and Love. Here are most traditional “Spring Songs” from Sweden and the UK along with Stenhammar’s I seraillets have, Henry Purcell’s In These Delightful Pleasant Groves and the traditional American song Shenandoah. The choir sings a unique choral version of Finneas Baird O’Connell’s Ocean Eyes and the newly composed Änglasång (Angels’ Choir) by Stefan Andersson.

The colours of The Magical Forest glow in this remarkable recording which brings together Sinikka Langeland’s Norwegian-Finnish-Swedish Starflowers quintet with the singers of the Trio Mediӕval. It’s an inspired concept: the Trio Mediӕval, with their affinity for folk music and their unique vocal blend, adapt themselves ideally to Sinikka’s sound-world, which is once archaic, timeless and contemporary. The quintet members, all bandleaders in their own right, are amongst the most characterful players in Scandinavia today, and Sinikka sets them free to improvise around her cycle of songs, built upon myths and legends of the world tree.

Over several summers Trio Mediaeval and trumpeter Arve Henriksen spent many days together by the beautiful Dalsfjorden on the Norwegian west coast, where most of the music on this recording was born. Fascinated and inspired by Icelandic sagas, beautiful chants, folk, religious hymns and fiddle tunes, the quartet has arranged a unique set of songs where improvisation, mediaeval and traditional music from Iceland, Norway and Sweden meet the present. The singers and trumpeter have often performed in live settings, a collaboration called "a richly musical and imaginative encounter" by The Guardian.

Sigurd Lie was one of the eminent and gifted composers at the end of the nineteenth century. His body of work includes instrumental music and music for male choir and, above all, around 75 songs seldom performed after his death. The song texts were written by Norwegian poets, among them Vilhelm Krag, Sigbjørn Obstfelder and Per Sivle. This is the first of two releases in which Kielland and Mortensen illuminate all the songs and let them shine.

Fiddler and composer Bjørn Kåre Odde has written new music for mixed choir and fiddle, and now he has recorded it together with the renowned choir Schola Cantorum under the direction of Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl. Debut solo album from Wobbler’s Lars Fredrik Frøislie! Fitting perfectly into the 70s prog-rock tradition where the keyboardist makes a solo album between the band albums, this is music Frøislie has been doing, mostly alone, during the pandemic. Had it not been for the pandemic, much of the material would probably have ended up on a new Wobbler album - but then run through the Wobbler grinder and with English lyrics.

This album is an extraordinary example of how music from two continents can merge into a noble work where concepts of cross-continental understanding make sense to everyone on both sides. MILTON IN SWEDISH is a breathtakingly beautiful cross-cultural love child.

Whatever one thinks and believes about salvation, sin and grace, one must have a heart of stone not to believe in Kim Rysstad when he interprets old spiritual songs such as "Jesus din søde forening at smake", "Villfarande barn" and " Langt Inn På Ville Heii".

Marekvist identify themselves as experimental folk music, but I'd dare to say that what these Norwegians play falls into much-much broader categories. Discarding all understatements, Solrenning is Scandinavian prog rock music (a term already much akin to RPI), in concentrated form. Apart from the really strong folk roots that many Scandinavian bands share (Ritual, Kerrs Pink, the mighty Änglagård etc.) their music also pays homage to the 70s Scandinavian bands. Fans of Trettioariga Kriget, Atlas, and Wigwam would enjoy the confident, vintage-sounding riffs, with some great grooves.
