Thibaut Garcia pays tribute with El Bohemio to the Paraguayan guitar virtuoso and composer Agustín Barrios (1885-1944). As Garcia explains, “Barrios is an essential composer in the guitarist’s repertoire. His music can be described as a skilful mix of South American popular music – inspired by the jungles of Paraguay – and the Romanticism of Chopin and Schumann, composers he idolised.” El Bohemio duly complements 16 varied works by Barrios himself with three of his transcriptions of famous pieces by Chopin, Schumann, and Beethoven. In addition, the album includes readings of two of Barrios’s poems: ‘Bohemio’, which lends the album its name, portrays the composer as a wandering troubadour; ‘Profesión de fé’ (Profession of faith) honours the Guarani, the indigenous people of Paraquay.

After Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert, Jordi Savall continues his journey into the 19th century with the Italian Symphony of Felix Mendelssohn, a composer he records for the first time. He delivers 2 versions of the work: the one which was performed at the wolrdwide premiere in 1833 and the revised one from 1834. The most conspicuous changes are to be found in the last tree movements. The comparison of the two scores and the performance on period instruments take us as close to Mendelssohn's work and original intention as we will ever get. Thanks to Jordi Savall's insightful conducting, there is still something to discover in Mendelssohn's most famous symphony.

Philly Joe Jones (1923-1985) carried his birthplace as part of his name throughout most of his jazz career in order to avoid confusion with the former Basie drummer star, Jo Jones, who was his first influence.

Frédéric Chopin is a composer who constantly fascinates. Despite the passing of time and a changing world, his music is still relevant. Janusz Wawrowski and Mischa Kozlowski reach for the works of Grieg, Paderewski, Noskowski and Sarasate to go back in time and show how Chopin, beloved by all of us, inspired in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The "Historiques" collection of Musique en Wallonie honors the Verviers violinist Alfred Dubois. As a soloist Dubois performed under prestigious conductors such as Michael Bowles, Charles Munch, Rhene-Baton, Nino Sanzogno, Hermann Scherchen and Felix Weingartner. It is worth emphasizing how energetically he spoke up in favour of Brahms, not only the violin concerto and the double concerto, but also the chamber music.

Their creative output reflects not only their individual brilliance and characters, but also the role of the creative artist in their time and across the centuries. Pianists Angela Hewitt and Stewart Goodyear, and violinist Yosuke Kawasaki, join Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra in this concluding homage.

“INFINITY” is an album on which Polish pianist Adam Kośmieja shows his individual take on a legendary minimal music masterpiece: “Canto Ostinato” (1976) written by a Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012). Holt wrote music of trance, meditation, and at the same time, filled with very strong emotions, which built culminations based on repetitive musical structures. Its repetitiveness, motoricity and spaciousness go far beyond the realm of a classical piano music performance.
