We gathered last spring at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn, rehearsed for a day, then recorded this album at the nearby Owl Parlor on March 29 and 30, 2023. As acclaimed indie folk band The Ballroom Thieves wrote and recorded their upcoming album, one central question emerged as the theme: “What if we could all just be a little more tender?” The duo – Calin Peters (vocals, cello, bass) and Martin Earley (vocals, guitar) – started to ponder what they could do to be more self-aware of their mental health and of those around them in a world oversaturated by social media, pop-culture, and digital consumption. The result is a lush, 10-track collection of thoughts on the human experience called Sundust, out April 12. “This group of songs is a self-portrait of our intertwined lives,” shares Peters.

Faye Webster's songs are direct lines to the human subconscious, and Underdressed at the Symphony documents what happens once you begin to build a new self from the ashes of your old routines. This rebirth isn't flashy or definitive, but is instead a series of seemingly mundane moments that, scattered across weeks and months, sneak their way toward something like healing. Yes, there's a breakup in play, but Webster is not documenting the heartbreak of a breakup so much as she's navigating the contours of heartbreak itself. Recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in Texas with her longtime band, Webster is accompanied on Underdressed at the Symphony by Matt Stoessel's arcs of shimmering pedal steel, the plaintive, unhurried drums of Charles Garner, and, occasionally, additional guitarwork from Wilco's Nels Cline. The title of the album refers to Webster's post-breakup compulsion to visit the symphony on a whim, usually buying a ticket at the last possible second.

Conchúr White's story began in bands. He played in atmospheric indie-rockers Silences, before their split allowed Conchúr to develop his solo voice at his own pace. That sense of freedom colors Conchúr's music. He is a music graduate who has also worked alongside young people with mental health issues. On the Bikini Crops and Dreamers EPs, he filtered the influences of acts such as Arctic Monkeys (recent vintage) and Father John Misty into songs at once playful, referential and experiential. The moonlit plea of this year's "Atonia", a cathartic reverie on sleep paralysis, showed White's melodic and lyrical talents blossoming.

Toronto indie rockers Jane's Party have announced a new EP, previewed today by a cover of Steely Dan's iconic "Dirty Work." The Best of Wild in the Woods Vol. 1 arrives November 6, following the band's recent single "Ships on an Ocean." Having previously only been a live performance series uploaded to the band's YouTube channel starting in the summer of 2021, select highlights from Wild in the Woods will soon be available on your streaming platform of choice.
