First released in 1971 as part of BYG Records’ groundbreaking Actuel series, Jacques Coursil’s Black Suite remains one of the boldest expressions of the Black Diaspora’s creative and political awakening. Recorded in Paris on June 10, 1969, this visionary work now returns in a newly restored and remastered edition, revealing its full depth and clarity for the first time in decades.

Digitally mastered from original BYG tapes by Nick Robbins. Florida-born saxophonist, composer, poet, actor and playwright Archie Shepp was one of the most articulate exponents of politicized black culture in the late ‘60s, a time of enormous upheaval and radical thought.

Double bassist Hélène Labarrière created PUZZLE on stage in March 2022: three years later, the recording made at WMStudio in Bringolo is released on the Jazzdor Series label, and will be the subject of a release concert at the 17th Jazzdor Strasbourg-Berlin festival in June 2025. Puzzle is a game of patience made up of irregularly cut pieces that have to be assembled to form a whole. Five small pieces were composed by Hélène Labarrière, then developed by musician friends (François Corneloup, Marc Ducret, Sylvain Kassap, Jacky Molard, Dominique Pifarely) to be transformed, arranged, recomposed, decomposed and made to grow. For each of these pieces, a great emancipating and inspiring figure forms the backdrop (Jane Avril, Angela Davis, Emma Goldman, Louise Michel and Thérèse Clerc).

A striking next chapter for two of the UK’s most distinctive improvisers.

Il Ciclo Del Sole Noturno consists of two long, suite-like improvised tracks that unfold as cohesive sonic landscapes. Recorded on two separate dates four years apart in the same church, the distinctive acoustics of the space became as much a part of the improvisation as the audible environmental sounds. Sound designer Thierry Simonot shapes these conditions into a richly textured sonic work.

The "straight horn" referred to in the title of this superb album from 1961 is the soprano saxophone, and Lacy is recognized as one of the greatest to ever play the instrument, ranking alongside John Coltrane and Sidney Bechet. Because of the difficulty involved in mastering it's pitch challenges, very few jazzmen concentrated on it. Lacy is widely considered the first "modern" musician to specialize on the instrument.
