Acclaimed composer and pianist Poppy Ackroyd returns with ‘Liminal’, her intimate new album released June 5th via One Little Independent Records. Written and recorded during a period of profound upheaval and transition, it marks a return to the core of Ackroyd’s practice, bringing piano and violin back together.

Duval Timothy and Carlos Niño have linked up for an album: Rain Music is due May 22, via their respective self-run labels, Carrying Colour and CNF. Navy Blue, Laraaji, and Nate Mercereau are among the guests.

Medieval hymns like Havun, Havun (Bird, Bird) by Grigor Narekatsi (10th century) and Nor tsaghik (New Flower) by Nerses Shnorhali (12th century) were seamlessly blended with improvisations, allowing the audience to experience these spiritual works in a fresh, modern context. Renowned composer Simon Fisher Turner presents his brand new album Instability of the Signal, released via Mute. Recorded by Simon Fisher Turner and Music Producers Guild Awards winner Francine Perry, this 13-track album is an intricate exploration of sound, inspired by the creative minds of Breda Beban, Hrvoje Horvatic, and poet Harold Pinter, whose verses ‘Democracy’ and ‘The Special Relationship,’ feature on the record.

The sophomore release from the freshly re-imagined Penguin Cafe is the culmination of two years work that has seen Arthur Jeffes - son of original composer and Penguin Cafe Orchestra founder Simon Jeffes - investigate whole new areas of sound and vibrancy, alongside his eclectic collection of musicians and characters, marking an ambitious extension from their debut 'A Matter of Life' (2011). The catalyst for the new recording came about when Jeffes worked on a project with the International Space Orchestra and NASA Ames in 2012, out of which came the pieces Aurora and 1420, which have since been beamed into space as part of NASA's Kepler project. These touchstones marked a satellitic beginning for a new album, a collection of songs that would then return to earth to undertake a rich, cross-continental, musical journey.

Our sixth album, D’Azur et d’Orage (Of Azure and Storm), marks a new artistic and creative stage. The result of two years of work, this album explores the contrasts of existence and seeks to translate them into music. Between calm and storm, it evokes metamorphoses, inner and outer journeys, and how each of us navigates them. D’Azur et d’Orage is an invitation to feel, to allow ourselves to be moved by opposing forces, and to find renewed energy in their encounter. This album explores a sonic universe where strings and percussion become the foundation and driving force of the voices, creating a musical texture that is both organic and vibrant. The songs rise in an invented language, a poetic tongue that transcends borders. This imaginary language is sometimes inspired by the sounds and rhythms of languages ​​from the greater Mediterranean to the Black Sea, evoking multiple roots and shared memories.

The soundtrack for the film “Kaibutsu” (Monster), with music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, will be released on May 31. The film “Kaibutsu” will be released on June 2 and is directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda and written by Yuji Sakamoto. The cast includes Sakura Ando, Eita Nagayama, Souya Kurokawa, Hinata Hiiragi, Mitsuki Takahata, Akihiro Kakuta, Shido Nakamura, and Yuko Tanaka. The album contains seven songs, including “20220207” and “20220302” from Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first original album in six years, “12,” as well as two songs newly written for the film.

Leftovers, out May 1, is a deeply personal meditation on memory; the moments, emotions, and experiences that linger long after they’ve passed. Conceived as a collection of life’s emotional fragments, the album connects past and present through raw, unfiltered performance.

UON is the sophomore full length by prolific German composer and producer Linus Alberg. Three years in the making, this is a collection of ten of his favourite recordings from an incredibly productive and creative period (with over 100 takes to choose from). “These pieces were all recorded and produced under changing circumstances, with different setups, spaces and life situations. For me, each one has become a kind of door or time capsule that takes me back to the time, place or moment when it was created. Even though they were produced independently of each other, I like that together they form a new shared story with their own connections.”

Throughout the later half of the 20th century, Edwin Land's Polaroid film came to dominate photo albums - offering the chance to 'capture the moment' and relive it seconds later, Land's product revolutionised the way people documented the world around them. Yet Polaroid cameras did more than simply recount past moments - the medium itself inserted a soft-focus, dream-like quality that appeared to suggest vague recollection over exacting reality.
