Slowhand is the fifth solo studio album by Eric Clapton. This is one of his most commercially and critically successful studio albums. Slowhand produced the two hit singles "Lay Down Sally" and "Wonderful Tonight", reached various international music charts and was honoured with numerous awards and recording certifications. Max Richter is paying homage to ground-breaking composer Ludwig van Beethoven on the occasion of his 250th anniversary on 17th December. Max Richter’s new work “Beethoven – Opus 2020” will consist of two musical components: for one, a subtle and soothing piano solo ‘Andante Loops’.

This programme focuses on the verse anthems of two leading musicians from the Restoration period’s church music revival. They stand as representatives of two generations who were deeply marked by the troubled socio-political context of early Stuart England, and both found their creativity temporarily restricted and sacrificed on the altar of Puritanism. Matthew Locke (ca 1621-1677) received his first musical training as a chorister at the cathedral of his native Exeter. During the turbulent years of the English Civil War, he went into exile in the Netherlands, a hive of Italianism, where he became familiar with the ultramontane style and probably converted to Catholicism.

Vienna, Salzburg and Rome were among the principal centres of power for the Holy Roman Empire of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and they accordingly attracted the most talented and ambitious composers of the day. The Venetian-born Caldara aspired to the post of Court Kapellmeister in Vienna, and composed the wedding music for Emperor Charles VI in 1708. He won huge success in Rome, where he followed in the footsteps of the young Handel, and eventually won the favour of the emperor himself, who even conducted some of Caldara’s operas.

Hailed by Hans von Bülow as the “Old Testament” of music history, the Well-Tempered Clavier has been the object of a substantial amount of publications and research over the past three centuries. A detailed analysis would surpass the limits of a CD booklet and could not do justice to the work’s complexity: readers will thus excuse me for limiting myself to a few personal remarks.

Keyboardist James Carney's dream group features a four-horn frontline: two saxes, a trumpet and a trombone. The music he’s given his starry band of improvisers to interpret on 2007's Green-Wood is beautifully crafted and intensely grooving in various feels, from second line and funk to 6/4 and complex time signatures. Inspired by the whole tradition, Carney’s aesthetic unites the jazz mainstream and avant-garde, blending musical derring-do with a post-bop-meets-chamber-music-and-rock lyricism. His band delivers with individuality and relish, while the high resolution recording makes the most of earcatching voicings, timbres and textures. It’s obvious both from his words and his music that Carney’s enthusiasm and energy is tempered by great thoughtfulness and reverence for the art form.

Poolplayers is another surprising manifestation of a direction in free improvised music that’s distinctive but hard to define: it’s more an attitude than a genre. Poolplayers make music on the introverted end of this nebulous movement, exploring the interaction of live electronics and their own personal languages of extended techniques to create soundscapes that exert a palpable fascination on this 2008 release. The members of the group, all well known in Europe, came together in France in 2005.

Following its previous album Evoke, with the pianist Timothy End, the Ferio Saxophone Quartet returns with this exciting and innovative programme of works for saxophone quartet and voices. Founded and directed by Freddie Crowley, the Corvus Consort is a vocal ensemble based in the UK, which draws its members from a pool of young singers in the early stages of their professional careers.

And yes, he was doing well, as father Leopold assured Mozart’s mother in a letter dated 28 October 1772. How can we even imagine what boredom must have felt like for a 16-year-old genius? Was he sitting lackadaisically at the table with his father, scribbling counterpoint on paper and casually inventing the genre of Classical string quartet in passing? Or was Wolfgang just solving musical-logical Sudokus, as we all tend to do in such cases?
