Like Chopin’s Barcarolle, Fauré’s work shows equal measures of limpidity and gravity, brightness and great depth. Finding the right words to describe music such as this, which is not at all descriptive, is far from easy, and it puts us on unsafe ground. In answer to a lady who asked him in what sunny climes he had written his Sixth Nocturne, the composer replied ‘In the Simplon tunnel’. An apt quip! But we are touched by this music, which is very secretive, yet very human, because of its élan, its aspiration to something vast, and at the same time its inner poetry. Not a single page of the thirteen Barcarolles is lacking in that inspiration, which so movingly brings them together as a set of thirteen poems.

The title of their second album, Ænima, although invented by the band, is meant in part to evoke Jung's concept of the "anima," or life force, and the LP is riddled with existential ruminations on why we're here and whether it's worth it. "How could this mean anything to me?" mutters Maynard James Keenan's protagonist in "Stinkfist," and his delivery is so convincingly wolrd-weary you almost don't notice that he's singing about having his arm "shoulder deep" up someone's rectum.

In 1975, coinciding with the inauguration of their new headquarters in Madrid, the Fundación Juan March launched their Young Performers recitals, a series of presenter-led concerts for secondary-school students, performed by leading Spanish artists. In their first season, five outstanding Spanish pianists—all former fellows of the Fundación—guided young listeners on a journey through the European piano tradition, from Mozart to Debussy. This remastering brings back to life the historical recordings of several performances from that first season. The selection included on the original 1976 LP, released under the title Conciertos para jóvenes. Recital de piano romántico, constitutes a valuable documentary record of Spanish pianism, now returned to circulation following a meticulous remastering process.

Part of L’Encyclopédie de l’orgue, this 1970 Erato digital release highlights early Iberian keyboard music, placing Portuguese composer Manuel Rodrigues Coelho within his 17th-century European context alongside contemporaries like Correa de Arauxo and Girolamo Frescobaldi. Settled in Lisbon as a professor in 1961 and appointed titular organist in 1965, Antoine Sibertin-Blanc contributed significantly to rediscovering the wonders of Portuguese classical organ music after a long decline. Here, he performs liturgical excerpts from Coelho’s 1620 collection Flores de música - including several Kyrie settings, Ave maris stella, and tentos - on the Flentrop grand organ of the Lisbon Cathedral.
