A rare outing for drummer Art Blakey performing with a big band. The 15-piece orchestra here gave Blakey the chance, or maybe the excuse, to pound his drums even louder and more aggressively than in his usual small-combo setting. Blakey preferred the freedom of small bands, but several of the musicians who worked with him on this album thought he was at his best drumming in a big band context. And some of the names in Blakey's band on this album? John Coltrane, Donald Byrd and Al Cohn, among many others.

Renowned Swizz pianist/composer George Gruntz became entranced by the music of the North African Maghreb on his 1964 visit to Tunisia. Over the next few years he revisited the area, taking in the melodies, rhythms, and improvisational styles of a Bedouin music rooted in 1000 years of nomadic culture. With the intent of integrating this music with jazz, Gruntz assembled the crème of the Bedouin players and a top-flight group of like-minded jazz musicians.

Bebop pioneer Howard McGhee was in and out of prison on drug charges for a good part of the 1950s, so there isn't much on record representing that decade. In fact he hadn't been near the studio in two years prior to this 1955 recordings, hence the title. He was anything but rusty, though: McGhee sounds re-energized here, possibly due to the inspiring presence of session musicians like Sahib Shihab on baritone and alto sax and Duke Jordan on piano.
