Nat Adderley led a double creative life at Riverside: featured on the highly successful working-group albums led by his brother Cannonball, and also devising several intriguingly different projects under his own name. Very possibly the most interesting was Work Song, which took its title from one of Nat's most widely known soulful compositions, and took its instrumentation from the younger Adderley's fertile imagination. "Roots & Herbs" is a jazz album by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, recorded in 1961 but not released on the Blue Note label until 1970. Like many titles in the Blue Note catalog, this fine Blakey outing was initially shelved by Alfred Lion for unknown reasons, but now that it's out once again with a 24-bit digital makeover, "Roots & Herbs" is definitely a welcome addition to the drum master's catalog.

Leeway is an album by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan released on the Blue Note label. It was recorded on April 28, 1960 and features performances by Morgan with Jackie McLean, Bobby Timmons, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey. "The Lion and the Wolff" is dedicated to producers Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff.

Bobby Timmons became famous for his funky piano solos and for his ability to write catchy songs. He was actually a well-rounded Jazz pianist who was more versatile than many thought. "Holiday Soul" is an album of Christmas music originally released on the Prestige label. Critic Marc Myers selected it for his Vintage Holiday Album Hall of Fame in 2015.

"The Opener" is Curtis Fuller’s remarkable debut on Blue Note Records. The trombonist delivers a fine set that features the tunes, “A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening”, “Here's To My Lady” and “Soon”. Fuller is joined by Hank Mobley, Bobby Timmons, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor.

The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco is a 1959 album by The Cannonball Adderley Quintet. The groundbreaking album launched "soul jazz", according to NPR, bridging "the gap between bebop and funk". The album was recorded at The Jazz Workshop in San Francisco before an appreciative standing-room only crowd. The album broke new ground as a live recording taped in noisy club environments, creating a formula that not only the Cannonball Quintet but other jazz ensembles would follow.
