Say She She - Cut & Rewind (2025) (Hi-Res)

After two acclaimed disco-funk albums in Prism (2022) and Silver (2023), female Brooklyn-based trio Say She She—named in tribute to Nile Rodgers—return with Cut & Rewind, a record made for the dancefloor that remains socially conscious in its message. The prolific and ever-inspired Nya Gazelle Brown, Sabrina Cunningham, and Piya Malik joined forces once again with Orgone's Dan Hastie (keyboards), Sam Halterman (drums), Dale Jennings (bass), and Sergio Rios (guitar) at Killion Sound Studios in Los Angeles. Often brief, the recording sessions were driven by spontaneity and live energy. "We never record anything that we can't recreate live—it's the same thing when the three of us are up on stage that happens in the studio."

Signed to young New York label drink sum wtr, known for its focus on standout R&B voices like Yaya Bey, Annahstasia, and Halima, the trio get us moving with silky vocal harmonies, groovy basslines, and polished yet unpretentious arrangements. Time flies as the album glides from classy neo-soul numbers (feminist ode "Under The Sun") sprinkled with R&B that puts vocals front and center ("Possibilities," "Take It All") to the feverish heights of psych-funk ("She Who Dares"). We'd happily strap on our roller skates to the single "Disco Life," which recalls the infamous Disco Demolition Night when DJ Steve Dahl invited fans to watch him blow up a collection of disco records at Chicago's Comiskey Stadium on July 12, 1979—a moment that marked the twilight of disco.
