"MELODIC VOICE" is the second release of MWENDO DAWA as a trio after the death of Ove Johansson, tenor saxophonist. The group looks back on a long history, but always finds new forms of expression and has found its own language.

Music has always sought new paths in the world of jazz – freeform, fusion, avant-garde and electroacoustic music. Improvised music, where live electronics seamlessly merge with acoustic instruments. Music that requires concentrated listening, but also with a lot of humor and exciting ideas.

in 2025, MWENDO DAWA will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The first edition of MWENDO DAWA was inspired by African music – hence the name. The line-up consisted of saxophone, Fender Rhodes, guitar, electric bass and three drummers. MWENDO DAWA attracted great attention from the very beginning and began to tour internationally. in 1978, MWENDO DAWA became one of the quintet released the first LP on the SONET label and had her big breakthrough at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1979. A live LP and a video were recorded there. At that time bassist Anders Jormin and guitarist Ulf Wakenius could be found in MWENDO DAWA. There were extensive tours first in Europe, from 1982 also in the USA. Now the group had shrunk to a quartet, and the Swede Lars Danielsson played on the bass. At the end of the 80s and in the following years, the group toured extensively through the USA and Canada.

Around the year 2000, MWENDO DAWA turned to free improvisation, in which computers improvise with acoustic instruments. Sound files with sounds that are designed like overtone series are sampled down to an audible level, live electronics mixed with free improvisation of acoustic instruments and computers. Whenever the group used compositions as a basis for improvisations, MWENDO DAWA began to use the twelve-tone technique to break away from the harmonic center. The group performed at many significant festivals, including Montreux, Montreal, North Sea, Beijing, Vilnius and many more. And that leads us to today's MWENDO DAWA Trio.
