After rave reviews off Broadway and in preview shows, Mean Girls is sure to be the next in line of Broadway musicals to become a pop culture phenomenon.

Comprised of Vancouver producers and multi-instrumentalists Nick Wisdom and Astrological, Canadian duo Potatohead People boast a number of noteworthy accolades thanks to a their signature sound drawing influences from 90's boom-bap, future soul, classic jazz, deep house and boogie/funk. Beginning with a series of EP's, including their landmark Kosmichemusik EP, Potatohead People's productions quickly made their way to artists like Illa J who tapped the duo to produce his now critically acclaimed self-titled album, as well as producers like Kaytranada (who co-produced Illa J's "Strippers" with the pair). Supporters such as Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, DJ Spinna, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg have also played formidable roles in championing the sound of Potatohead People worldwide. Now with three years since their last release, 2015's critically acclaimed debut album Big Luxury, Potatohead People are back with their long awaited new album Nick & Astro's Guide To The Galaxy. The record picks up right where the pair left off, showcasing a leap forward in production chops, musicality, and songwriting.

One of the leading producers and instrumentalists in Brazilian music, Alexandre Kassin has produced roughly 100 records for singers, including Marisa Monte and Bebel Gilberto, recorded with Sean O'Hagan (Stereolab, High Llamas) and made a full album based on Nintendo GameBoy sounds. He has played bass for Caetano Veloso’s live shows and conceptualized the Orchestra Imperial band. His new album, Relax, is rooted in dreams and surrealism, yet grounded enough to reach listeners where they are. Across 11 tracks, Kassin flirts with Latin rhythms, Brazilian pop, and straight-ahead soul, using this varied stylistic array to tell imagined tales of death, drug usage, politics and fate. There's a dichotomy to Relax, with Kassin's arrangements often feeling bright and danceable, yet with incredibly sullen themes. It's a record that speaks directly to the yin and yang of everyday life, and the uncertainty that comes with simply existing.

These 28 tracks, 72 minutes in total, cover a wide range of musical styles and eras, from the 60s to the present, urban to rural, primarily by Thai vocalists and musicians, with contributions from Japan and the Philippines. 60s-America-style pop by Suri Yamuhi and the Babylon Band as well as contemporary EDM, trap and hip hop sounds are all present, but the core of this soundtrack are luk thung and molam classics from the 70s and 80s by Angkhanang Khunchai, On-uma Singsiri, Dao Bandon, Khwanta Fasawang and “The Countryside is Great” by Rungphet Laemsing, a pivotal song in the film. All tracks are complete versions, some incorporating dialogue from the film. This CD-only OST features English lyrics, and liner notes by the film’s directors Katsuya Tomita and Toranosuke Aizawa, plus Iwao Yamazaki, Young-G and MMM of the Kuzok team, and Soi 48. This is the first soundtrack release by EM Records.

A two-disc set drawn from the Trojan vaults, Arise Rootsman is a varied and well-sequenced tour of Jamaican roots reggae. Highlights are frequent, including the opening track, "After a Storm," by Justin Hinds & the Dominoes, "Train to Glory," by the Ethiopians, and the best version the Heptones did of one of their best songs, "Hypocrite." An early Wailing Souls track, "Harbour Shark," is a particular delight.

Progressive bluegrass band Trampled by Turtles are from Duluth, Minnesota, where frontman Dave Simonett initially formed the group as a side project in 2003. At the time, Simonett had lost most of his music gear, thanks to a group of enterprising car thieves who'd ransacked his vehicle while he played a show with his previous band. Left with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, he began piecing together a new band, this time taking inspiration from bluegrass, folk, and other genres that didn't rely on amplification. Simonett hadn't played any bluegrass music before, and he filled his lineup with other newcomers to the genre, including fiddler Ryan Young (who'd previously played drums in a speed metal act) and jam band bassist Tim Saxhaug. Along with mandolinist Erik Berry and banjo player Dave Carroll, the group began carving out a fast, frenetic sound that owed as much to rock & roll as bluegrass.

The most high-profile percussionist of the 1970s and still among the most famous, Airto Moreira (often simply known by his first name) helped make percussion an essential part of many modern jazz groups; his tambourine solos can border on the amazing. Airto originally studied guitar and piano before becoming a percussionist. He played locally in Brazil, collected and studied over 120 different percussion instruments, and in 1968 moved to the U.S. with his wife, singer Flora Purim. Airto played with Miles Davis during part of 1969-1970, appearing on several records (most notably Live Evil).

Blues musician Ryan Perry announces the release of his solo debut, High Risk, Low Reward, via Ruf Records March 13, 2020.
We first met Ryan Perry as a teenage phenomenon, when he hijacked 2007’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis with his Homemade Jamz Blues Band, and announced his talent for sharp storytelling, stinging guitar and soulful vocals. This charismatic bandleader’s talents have only grown over the last decade, and following 2020’s solo debut on Ruf Records, Ryan is the finished article, armed with a setlist to raise the roof. Mehmet Polat has announced the release of a new ud album titled Ageless Garden. “‘Music has been the best language with which to express my inner world for more than 30 years. And for the last 20 years, ud has been the main instrument on this journey. I composed these ten compositions during different phases of my life as a migrant musician. And I play them on this album through the lens of my vision of today.’

As the 1960s drew to a close, a new, exciting sound emerged in Jamaica that would swiftly take the music world by storm: reggae. During this formative period, the music was marked by its rapid tempo, which by the dawn of the Seventies had been superseded by the more relaxed style that today is more readily associated with the genre. In recent years, the early, energetic form of reggae has been branded ‘boss’ or ‘skinhead’ reggae – the latter reflecting its association with the UK’s youth sub-culture that championed the style.
