A quarter of a century after the release of her debut album "Horses", New York political rebel Patti Smith shows that the old fire is still burning. She presents herself very powerfully and energetically on "Gung Ho" and professes her musical history in all clarity.

No Samples, no Breaks, no synthetic sounds. Instead, razor-sharp guitar riffs, driving drums and a grumbling rock bass guarantee a refreshingly old-fashioned sound and high recognition value.

Patti's voice is unmistakable anyway and has a lot of warmth (age wisdom?) extracted. She still denounces social grievances, recalls the drug misery in the cities or the legacy of the Vietnam War: in the title song threatening guitars mix with the rattling of the US war helicopters.

But where in earlier years a plaintive and snappy tone crept in, Mrs. Smith allows herself today at best a restrained melancholy. And when one song ("China Bird") is all too sad, immediately follows a brightener with punky-fast lead guitar.

Musically, all this is not exactly revolutionary and not only with "Grateful" you would like to swear to have heard the song before. Schuster, stick to your ledges, the singer may have thought: this is songwriting at the highest level and she has found excellent collaborators in her old guitarist Lenny Kaye and the REM singer Michael Stipe.
