Ensemble Paramirabo - Voix jetées (2024) [Official Digital Download 24/96]

This work was originally conceived as the third movement of my chamber opera "Listening to the Lost". The different movements of this opera act as episodic memories based on the memories of different individuals in relation to a person or a place. This work is entitled after the text commissioned for the movement, Voix Jetées, by Michaël Trahan. The text was commissioned in order to evoke the memory of a sound or music inspired by a person. Voix jetées is structured like an aria, which is initially presented in a minimal way and which gradually reveals itself throughout the piece. The entrance into the room begins with a palette of white noises, which intermittently match with brief whispers of melodies, like a radio that briefly picks up a momentary signal. The transition is made to the formal introduction of the aria, presented as a minimal and patient basso continuo, stratified and dispersed within the ensemble. The voice makes its entrance with the harmonic pulsation of the piano and the cello which is slowly building up. As the work develops, the ensemble begins to become more active and to flourish between the sentences of the voice. The voice is enriched with ornamentations and suspensions in harmonic time, while the whole begins to entangle and weave between the phrases of the voice, playing both the role of echo and counterpoint. When the voice disappears, the piece ends as it had begun. The white noise resurfaces and begins to envelop the melody and harmony until the aria disappears completely in the static.
