Théodore Gouvy, a Saarland-Lorraine composer, combines French grace, elegance and clear structure with German thoroughness and depth. His work mainly includes symphonic and chamber music; he shaped the French wind school and influenced the neoclassical. With his septet, octets and nonets, Gouvy anticipates a modern instrumentation that would only really come into its own at the turn of the 20th century. As a bilingual musician, he stood between the cultures of Germany and France and acted as a true musical link between the two countries. This double cultural reference influenced his artistic orientation and formed the special profile of his complete work. Gouvy was as well-known, recognized and respected in France as in Germany, but he was German to one and French to the other, so that neither of the two nations really claimed him for themselves. Despite his brilliant career, he came to fame in the 20th century. It was wrongly forgotten in the twentieth century.
