This volume contains the proceedings of a five-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop "On Three Levels, the mathematical physics of micro-, meso-, and macro­ phenomena," conducted from July 19 to 23 in Leuven, Belgium. The main purpose of the workshop was to bring together and to confront where relevant, classical and quantum approaches in the rigorous study of the relation between the various levels of physical description. The reader will find here discussions on a variety of topics involving a broad range of scales. For the micro-level, contributions are presented on models of reaction-diffusion pro­ cesses, quantum groups and quantum spin systems. The reports on quantum disorder, the quantum Hall effect, semi-classical approaches of wave mechanics and the random Schrodinger equation can be situated on the meso-level. Discussions on macroscopic quantum effects and large scale fluctuations are dealing with the macroscopic level of description. These three levels are however not independent and emphasis is put on relating these scales of description. This is especially the case for the contributions on kinetic and hydrodynamicallimits, the discussions on large deviations and the strong and weak coupling limits. The progress in computer technology during the last 10-15 years has enabled the performance of ever more precise quantum mechanical calculations related to structure and interactions of chemical compounds. However, the qualitative models relating electronic structure to molecular geometry have not progressed at the same pace. There is a continuing need in chemistry for simple concepts and qualitatively clear pictures that are also quantitatively comparable to ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Topological methods and, more specifically, graph theory as a fixed-point topology, provide in principle a chance to fill this gap. With its more than 100 years of applications to chemistry, graph theory has proven to be of vital importance as the most natural language of chemistry. The explosive development of chemical graph theory during the last 20 years has increasingly overlapped with quantum chemistry. Besides contributing to the solution of various problems in theoretical chemistry, this development indicates that topology is an underlying principle that explains the success of quantum mechanics and goes beyond it, thus promising to bear more fruit in the future.

Nel corso del secolo scorso, il confine tra antropologia e letteratura si è spesso rivelato labile, soprattutto nell'ambito dell'etnografia. Questo volume esplora le dinamiche di questo rapporto complesso, sottolineando come la scrittura antropologica sia stata influenzata da tecniche narrative tipiche della letteratura, e viceversa. L'obiettivo è ribaltare la concezione tradizionale che separa nettamente l'immaginario scientifico da quello letterario, dimostrando come l'etnografia possa essere un terreno fertile per l'esplorazione creativa e l'immaginazione culturale. Attraverso l'analisi di opere classiche e meno note, si evidenzia come l'inclusione di testi precedentemente esclusi per motivi metodologici possa arricchire notevolmente la nostra comprensione delle diverse culture.

L'Occidente è ossessionato dalla Cina, spesso però la osserva con miopia o secondo schemi interpretativi inadeguati. Misero e frustrato ingranaggio nella spietata macchina della burocrazia statale, trascorre le giornate a temperare le penne del suo superiore coltivando il sogno di sposarne la figlia. Niente più di una velleitaria illusione, che si rivelerà però l'inizio di una lenta disgregazione raccontata nelle pagine di questo diario, pubblicato nel 1835 e poi incluso nei Racconti di Pietroburgo. Con il suo sguardo surreale, in bilico tra pietà e ironia, Gogol' segue il protagonista nel suo lento scivolare giorno dopo giorno nel gorgo della follia. Una follia che è un grido di rivolta e una disperata via di fuga dall'alienante omologazione del sistema che, ieri come oggi, condanna all'invisibilità i modesti «impiegati della vita» come Popriščin.

Un lessico nuovo - fatto di droni, sensori, riconoscimento facciale e big data - ha preso piede nel racconto delle frontiere. E a questo si accompagna una promessa ricorrente, parlando di migrazioni: che la tecnologia risolverà tutto. Algoritmi, sensori e intelligenza artificiale sapranno finalmente distinguere chi ha diritto di passare e chi no, e così le «frontiere intelligenti» saranno più efficienti, più sicure, più giuste. Ma dietro questa illusione di neutralità si cela una verità molto meno rassicurante.
