This book is a guide to non-academic careers for quantitative social scientists. Written by social science PhDs working in large corporations, non-profits, tech startups, and alt-academic positions in higher education, this book consists of more than a dozen chapters on various topics on finding rewarding careers outside the academy. Chapters are organized in three parts. Part I provides an introduction to the types of jobs available to social science PhDs, where those jobs can be found, and what the work looks like in those positions. Part II creates a guide for social science PhDs on how to set themselves up for such careers, including navigating the academic world of graduate school while contemplating non-academic options, and selling their academic experience in a non-academic setting.

Univariate statistical analysis is concerned with techniques for the analysis of a single random variable. This book is about applied multivariate analysis. It was written to p- vide students and researchers with an introduction to statistical techniques for the ana- sis of continuous quantitative measurements on several random variables simultaneously. While quantitative measurements may be obtained from any population, the material in this text is primarily concerned with techniques useful for the analysis of continuous obser- tions from multivariate normal populations with linear structure. While several multivariate methods are extensions of univariate procedures, a unique feature of multivariate data an- ysis techniques is their ability to control experimental error at an exact nominal level and to provide information on the covariance structure of the data. These features tend to enhance statistical inference, making multivariate data analysis superior to univariate analysis. While in a previous edition of my textbook on multivariate analysis, I tried to precede a multivariate method with a corresponding univariate procedure when applicable, I have not taken this approach here. Instead, it is assumed that the reader has taken basic courses in multiple linear regression, analysis of variance, and experimental design. While students may be familiar with vector spaces and matrices, important results essential to multivariate analysis are reviewed in Chapter 2. I have avoided the use of calculus in this text.

It also explains how to construct n-gram variables from text data. Examples, conceptual exercises and exercises using software are featured throughout, together with case studies in Stata, mostly from the social sciences; true to the book’s goal to facilitate the use of modern methods of data science in the field. Following the classical sampling theory, the survey statistician selects samples of people, businesses or others, in order to obtain the desired information. Drawing the samples is usually done by randomly selecting from a list representing the target population. In practice, this list is often not available. At best, the statistician only has access to a different list, indirectly related to the targeted population.

This book describes official statistics as a tool to hold up a mirror to society – but also as an instrument for those who can manipulate this mirror. It addresses the precarious interaction of politics, official statistics, and ethical principles. Three sets of themes can be derived from this relationship, which are the focus of this book: Political systems and guiding principles, official statistics as a science of the state, and ethical issues arising from them. Ultimately, the determining factor is the political system that exists in each case.

This textbook considers statistical learning applications when interest centers on the conditional distribution of the response variable, given a set of predictors, and when it is important to characterize how the predictors are related to the response. As a first approximation, this can be seen as an extension of nonparametric regression.

This textbook teaches some of the basic econometric methods and the underlying assumptions behind them. It also includes a simple and concise treatment of more advanced topics in spatial correlation, panel data, limited dependent variables, regression diagnostics, specification testing and time series analysis. The objective of Missing Data: Analysis and Design is to enable investigators who are non-statisticians to implement modern missing data procedures properly in their research, and reap the benefits in terms of improved accuracy and statistical power.

Ordinal Data Modeling is a comprehensive treatment of ordinal data models from both likelihood and Bayesian perspectives. Written for graduate students and researchers in the statistical and social sciences, this book describes a coherent framework for understanding binary and ordinal regression models, item response models, graded response models, and ROC analyses, and for exposing the close connection between these models. A unique feature of this text is its emphasis on applications. All models developed in the book are motivated by real datasets, and considerable attention is devoted to the description of diagnostic plots and residual analyses. Software and datasets used for all analyses described in the text are available on websites listed in the preface.
