Landscape was an English synthpop band, best known for the 1981 hits "Einstein A Go-Go" and "Norman Bates." Formed in London in 1974, the band toured constantly during the mid-to-late-1970s, playing rock, punk, jazz venues and releasing two instrumental EPs on its own Event Horizon label. The group began experimenting with computer-programmed music and electronic drums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, making records in the emerging genre of synthpop. Landscape was composed of Richard James Burgess, Christopher Heaton, Andy Pask, Peter Thoms, John Walters.

Hearing Budd's piano slowly fade in with the start of "Late October" is just one of those perfect moments – it's something very distinctly him, made even more so with Eno's touches and slight echo, and it signals the start of a fine album indeed. Acting in some respects as the understandable counterpart to Ambient 2, with the same sense of hushed, ethereal beauty the partnership brought forth on that album, The Pearl is so ridiculously good it instantly shows up much of the mainstream new age as the gloopy schlock that it often is. Eno himself is sensed as a performer on the album, if not by his absence then by his very understated presence.

Phil Woods really outdoes himself here – offering the world a whole new side of his talents, and stepping forth at the head of a larger ensemble than usual! The album features Woods' core quartet augmented by larger strings and horns – all in shadings and tones that are incredibly expressive, and filled with warm colors and rich tones that never get bogged down in hoke or too-easy inflections!

This second release from the Claudia Quintet (and their first on the Cuneiform label) not only offers Claudia's great blend of instrumental textures from tenor sax/clarinet, vibraphone, accordion, acoustic bass, drums, and percussion, but also provides a satisfying stroll among multiple musical genres. Drummer John Hollenbeck is the group's composer, and his clever pieces move effortlessly from funky chamber jazz to minimalism (both rhythmic and ambient), with some African elements and "new music" vocabulary thrown in for good measure. A good example of Hollenbeck's eclecticism (one of many) would be the piece "…Can You Get Through This Life With a Good Heart?," which was inspired by a quote from Joni Mitchell in a PBS documentary. It opens, in Hollenbeck's words, with "the harmonic clouds and space of Morton Feldman," which eventually give way to a pensive folk melody stated by accordion and vibes.

The first of two separate CDs from concerts done in Paris during the winter of 1964, Monk's quartet with Butch Warren (bass), Ben Riley (drums) and Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), showcases one standard and four of the pianist's originals. Only "Epistrophy," the closer, is in short form. Noticeable from the opening refrains of "Four in One" is Rouse, bending notes, extrapolating and modifying the melody, challenging Monk to do the same. The pianist then does a retort before laying completely out as Rouse solos. The band follows the same easy swinging mid-tempo ritual for the next two pieces; "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" and "Straight, No Chaser," as tenor sax, piano, bass and drum solos line up before heading back to the melody. A stride-ish intro by Monk sets up "Sentimental" and "Epistrophy," while solos are concise.

Of all the volumes in the Mosaic Select series, this one, and the Big John Patton box, are the most satisfying, though for very different reasons. This one is a true collector's gem. For starters, all but six of the 31 cuts on this three-CD box are previously unreleased. For Hill fans who knew there was more in the can, this is a most welcoming find. The material here was completely composed by Hill and was recorded in five sessions between 1967 and 1970. The pianist and composer is found in three different settings, from trio to sextet and septet with some octet sides. The personnel here varies, too. The sextet sessions feature Hill with Bennie Maupin, Pat Patrick, Charles Tolliver, Ron Carter, and either Paul Motian or Ben Riley on drums. These are the earliest cuts here and they are solid as solid can be.

This is only Digital Primitives' third recording, released four years after Hum Crackle & Pop (Hopscotch), but the trio sounds as if its three members have been playing together for ages. This double disc is comprised of two sets—Lipsomuch and Soul Searchin'. The trio—reed player Assif Tsahar, multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore and drummer Chad Taylor—have created their own aesthetics: concise, collaborative storytelling compositions, respectful for the blues and modern jazz legacies but fascinated by rock, folk and world music, inventive and imaginative in its sound vocabulary but always with rooted in an effective rhythmic envelope.

ALL of two nights live at Ronnie Scott's in London, 198, transferred from original analogue tapes professionally recorded by Mole Jazz. THE TWELVE BARS OF THE DECADE; Blues for the Fisherman was hailed by one jazz journalist as just that when four of these tracks were released in the U.K. in 1980 by Mole Jazz. That LP remained at the top of the British jazz charts for well over a year, so Mole eventually released a second album from the same session.

This album is the result of years of research into the music of Gerry Mulligan. After pouring through hundreds of scores, transcribing many solos, and interviewing a number of players, I have released 13 of my favorite Gerry Mulligan tunes. It was recorded with 4 musicians who all played with Gerry Mulligan. Dean Johnson on Bass, Dave Glenn on Trombone, Bill Mays on Piano, and Ron Vincent on Drums. These world class players bring a familiarity and quality to the music that is just unmatched.

One thing that makes the music on this recording exceptional is of course that it could only have been played by these four musicians. Each one is an individual with his own sound, his own approach to improvising and each has his own musical experience to draw from. Another thing that makes it remarkable is the attitude and inspiration of the quartets leader and composer. Eric leads without dominating, sharing his compositions and ideas with his partners in such a way that allows each one the freedom to contribute their own ideas and inventions to the whole. Last, but not least, Eric’s wonderfully adventurous trumpet playing and his humanity.

Oddly, there is no listing of instruments in the CD leaflet, but the core group is a trio of electric guitar, bass, and drums, with "guest" flutist Stefano Benini added on several numbers. This is a concept album, what leader Carlo Ceriani calls "a new reading" of "music of [his] generation." Ceriani contributed tunes of his own in addition to ones written by or associated with 1960s icons Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead, King Crimson, and others of that era. The guitarist generally takes all the pieces at a relaxed pace, treating them respectfully as jazz heads, focusing on the essence of the themes, and reminding us just how beautiful some of these classic rock melodies can be.

In a change of pace, for this recording vibraphonist Cal Tjader recorded cool-toned bop without a Latin rhythm section. Half of the ten songs (mostly jazz standards) feature Tjader switching to drums (his original instrument) in a quartet also including the obscure trombonist Bob Collins, guitarist Eddie Duran and bassist Al McKibbon. Tjader is back on vibes for the quintet selections with tenor saxophonist Brew Moore, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Bobby White. He sounds right at home in both formats and the swinging quintet numbers in particular are a good reason to search for this valuable album.

Sketches from the interface of jazz and modern chamber music. Powerful, dynamic and richly rewarding. You can probably look at the instrumentation and personnel on this disc and know approximately what to expect. Alexander von Schlippenbach will be well known to many listeners as the leader of the Schlippenbach Trio that also features Paul Lovens and Evan Parker. He’s also the founder of the Globe Unity Orchestra, and has famously recorded interpretations of all of Thelonious Monk’s original compositions.
