Space Is Warm

The Bowhead is one of humanity's greatest achievements: a massive colony ship, on a 15 year journey to reach the site of humanity's first colony amongst the stars. For Kallie Frye, a member of the Bowhead's crew, it's an opportunity to explore the stars she's spent a lifetime watching up close. Fortunately for Kallie, she'll have a whole year to study the cosmos, during her tenure as one of two crew members maintaining the ship while the rest of the crew is in hyper sleep.

It's an exciting opportunity for Kallie… but not without drawbacks. A year alone in the cold depths of deep space promises to be more than a little lonely. Fortunately, Kallie isn't alone; she has Keiko Tanaka, an engineer, to help keep the ship running. Unfortunately, while Keiko's a skilled engineer, she seems completely uninterested in giving Kallie anything more than the time of day.

Yet Kallie remains determined not to spend an entire year with no one to talk to but herself. More than once, she tries to hold conversations with Keiko, to mixed results. As time trickles by, Kallie slowly realizes that her interest in the brilliant and beautiful engineer goes beyond just wanting someone to talk to. Yet Keiko remains aloof, and Kallie can't even call her a friend, let alone anyone else.

Despite it all, a year is a long time for two people to be alone together, especially when they're both stuck on a starship. As ship malfunctions and awkward dinners push the two together, Kallie finally has the opportunity to learn a thing or two about Keiko. Yet will anything ever come of their time alone together? Or is this year doomed to be the coldest and loneliest of Kallie's life?
