Bach's celebrated visit to Frederick at Potsdam in 1747. It is C.P.E. Bach, rather than the elder Bach, who is the primary influence on the short keyboard sonatas and sonatinas recorded here. Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that Heitor Pereira will be composing the music for the upcoming animated feature Smallfoot. The film is directed by Karey Kirkpatrick (Over the Hedge) and features the voices of Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Gina Rodriguez, Danny DeVito, Yara Shahidi, Ely Henry and Jimmy Tatro. A romantic coming-of-age drama set in the 1950s, Inventing the Abbotts was an early film for its now-famous cast, Liv Tyler, Jennifer Connely, Joaquin Phoenix and Billy Crudup. It got reasonable reviews but did little business at the box office and, a decade and a half later, is largely forgotten. The score came from the great Michael Kamen, seemingly making a real effort to avoid action films at that point of his career having made his name on them earlier on. The album opens with “On Springfield Mountain”, a beautiful new arrangement of the folk song (one of the earliest American folk songs) with largely new lyrics and an arrangement by Kamen which features all the trademark panache he brought to so many film songs over the years; Tara MacLean’s vocal performance is beautiful.

As a professional singer, Hasmik Baghdasaryan, the soloist of the vocal ensemble Luys, appreciates the way the members of the Armenian quintet work together. The musicians’ cooperation within the ensemble is very harmonious and cheerful but at the same time on a high professional level. When on tour, Luys presents two very exclusive pieces of music “Banin Hor“ and “Ibr Zard“: The first piece was specially written for Hasmik Baghdasaryan, while the other one has been composed by her good friend, the well-known Armenian composer and artist Vahan Artsruni. He gave Luys the exclusive right to sing this song, which is a great honor to the artists. Besides her work with Luys, Hasmik Baghdasaryan has recorded many albums with modern composers, as for example with the Greek composer Alkis Baltas; with Vahan Artsruni she has recorded music comprising the music era of more than 500 years; and she has transferred the music of Mesrop Mashtots into the modern music age….

There is no shortage of recordings of this, Handel’s most popular orchestral work. It has been proffered in renditions with ensembles large and small, and warmly embraced by both period- and modern-instrument enthusiasts. There are even recordings of excerpts arranged early in the 20th century for “modern” symphony orchestra by the eminent Irish conductor and composer Sir Hamilton Harty. It was in this last incarnation that most of us baby boomers first encountered Handel’s marvelous creation. One of the interesting points found on this release comes in scans 11 and 12. They are the original versions—pitched in the key of F—of two movements usually performed as part of the sequence of pieces in D. Mackerras includes both the original and revised movements in their appropriate spots. I prefer Handel’s originals, as they bring down the curtain on the set of pieces in F with more of a feeling of finality than the D-Minor movement that usually rounds out the suite…
