An author spent a year and a half filming what happened as a new apartment building was built in the El Chino neighborhood of Barcelona. En Construccion focuses less on the practicalities of raising a building than the impact the project has on those who live in the neighborhood, including a teenage couple squatting in a nearby building, an illegal alien looking for work for himself and his son, and a neighborhood girl who becomes infatuated with one of the construction workers. The death of a stray cat and the discovery of a mass grave during construction also points to the tragic losses that are sometimes part and parcel of progress.

IMDB - 11 wins

Over three years, José Luis Guerín recorded with obsessive rigor the demolition of an entire section of the Barrio Chino, a crumbling working-class neighborhood in Barcelona, and the construction of a modern residential complex for the new Catalan middle-class. But as the construction of the city of the future proceeds, the past reasserts itself over and over again: as much in the eerie discovery of an ancient Roman cemetery below the foundations of the new building as in the rich cultural lore revealed in a casual conversation between two old neighbors.

A miracle of observational documentary, Guerín’s incredibly intimate and ubiquitous camera shows how the life of this section of town will be changed, how the old inhabitants will be displaced, along with their customs and words that seem to represent a culture also on the brink of extinction. The immigrants and laborers that the construction brings in each contribute in their turn to the process of transformation of one city into another.

José Luis Guerín was born in 1960 in Barcelona, Spain. His films, Los motivos de Berta, Innisfree and Tren de sombras comprise an oeuvre that is absolutely unique in Spanish cinema, working always around the blurry limits between documentary and fiction. En construcción was awarded the Special Jury Prize at last year's San Sebastián Film Festival, an infrequent accolade for a documentary.
