This time "Megastructures" refers to the mother of all mega-buildings – the Panama Canal built between 1906 and 1920. It was the most gigantic construction site of the 20th century. Almost 50,000 workers blasted with 30 million kilograms of dynamite the 80-kilometer-long canal through the yellow-fevered jungle. 1914, the $300-million project to connect the Atlantic and Pacific was solemnly completed.
How was it done before the Panama Canal was dug? The route opened between the Atlantic and the Pacific is so essential that one is right to ask the question. The construction of this canal mobilized some 100,000 workers: a look back in pictures at this astonishing and, in many respects, heroic epic.
This achievement, one of the "wonders of the industrial world," must today meet the challenge of increasing maritime traffic and the size of ships using this corridor: the slightest error in traffic forecasting can lead to accidents, delays, or exponential additional costs.
In April 2006, the plans for the development were announced. Main goal is to build the locks of 34 meters wide and 305 meters long on 55 meters wide and 427 meters long.
