Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) is the most popular French author of the 19th century. With a great sense of romance and action, he is at the center of a writing workshop producing true sagas at an almost frenetic pace. Reinventing French history, he is a true "show-runner," breathing energy into his characters and situations, often inspired by his own life. His two main works Les Trois Mousquetaires and Le Compte de Monte Cristo have been translated into all languages since their publication in 1844/45. Between fiction and reality, this documentary recounts the life of a Renaissance Epicurean lost in the 19th century, an author who made generations of readers dream of his Musketeers who are now part of the common heritage of humanity.
To celebrate the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of his death, our film marks ten years of the life of Alexandre Dumas. We follow Alexandre Dumas as he travels throughout Europe, from Florence to Montecristo, from Marseille to Saint-Germain-en-Laye and from Paris to Brussels. From embarrassment to wealth and glory to bankruptcy, the ten years between 1842 and 1852 sum up an extravagant life full of ups and downs, characterised by creative bulimia and an extraordinary appetite for life. We meet the father of "The Three Musketeers" who, with his remarkable sense for action, took his inspiration from his own story to breathe life into his characters.
