Here's a template for a 4-issue miniseries: Take a space ship--call it Savannah--on its voyage home with an all-women crew. All pretty women, with abnormally, unrealistically large bosoms and curvaceaous figures clad in skintight suits. Then, present a cool, clever bit of sci-fi problem for the crew to run into and solve each issue, such as... well, inter-dimensional beings, aggressive aliens, jungle planets that dissolve their spacesuits, and the like. And what have you got? Oh yeah, there are always those curmudgeons who'd grumble and gripe that this is just another shallow, sexually exploitative comic book. The only thing is that with writers Frank Cho and Doug Murray, 50 Girls 50 is anything but shallow, not to mention that there is nothing sexual at all in this miniseries as there are no males in the story nor is there any hint of romantic involvement among the women. What it is, is a fun, terrific series that does not suffer from any letdown. It is also a very pretty comic book, what with artist Axel Medellin whose skinsuit seam designs have a way of accentuating the curves and giving these women a stronger sense of energy, motion and depth than you’d normally expect--and I say that with all seriousness. So if you'd much rather look at pictures of muscular men in skintight outfits than of brainy, pretty women in skintight outfits in a series that delivers on the storyline aspect, skip this download and go on to the next post. By the way did I mention that all four issues are high-quality Minutemen scans?

Separately, thirteen mystical Artifacts will guide the fate of the Universe. Together, thirteen Artifacts will end the Universe. When a mysterious antagonist kidnaps, Hope, the daughter of Sara Pezzini and Jackie Estacado, Armageddon is put into motion. Starring virtually every character in the Top Cow Universe, this series by Top Cow Universe architect Ron Marz (Witchblade, Magdalena) with the art team of Michael Broussard (), Rick Basaldua (The Darkness), Sal Regla (Magdalena) and Sunny Gho of IFS (Velocity), puts together their own version of the "Big Event" so favored by DC and Marvel. As we all know, big events don't necessarily mean top quality values as shown by recent developments in DC and Marvel. Top Cow, on the other hand seems to have pulled this one off, keeping strong character development grounded by a solid storyline and artwork.

We're all aware of that trend in comics to bring together disparate fictional characters into one world. Think , , , . So it is with , albeit with a narrower focus, bringing into a single mainstream all the popular heroes and villains of The Bard's collective works. No master's degree in English is required, save perhaps at least an introductory level into the nature of Shakespeare's plays and that's even optional. This 12-part epic tale starts out simple enough in a straightforward manner but then builds upon itself with various threads that all together come to a satisfying and exceptionally delivered conclusion. There's just the right atmosphere of experimental cachet that's quite stylish and creative, proof that the writing and artwork are both very well in sync. Evidently many like it, too, since Kill Shakespeare was a 2011 Harvey Award nominee for Best New Series. The solicitation of the 12th issue "...ends its first run..." hints at a continuation; I do hope there is. A fun read from start to finish. All Minutemen scans.
