Napoleonic Cavalry

Napoleonic Cavalry
Philip J. Haythornthwaite | Cassell & Co | 2002 | ISBN:0304355089 | 128 Pages | 26 MB

Without cavalry, Napoleon remarked, battles were without result–and it was, in fact, a most important part of the army at that time. Today's leading Napoleonic expert shows how the great cavalry commanders used, and misused, their resources. Hundreds of illustrations offer close-ups of weapons and forces. Paintings of major battles detail the cavalry deployment in all its complexity and feature valuable, unique descriptions of saber, lance, armor, and carbines. Through the author's explanations of how cavalry functioned in the skirmish line and the charge, technical debates that have raged among experts over the years are finally resolved.

Going Over: The Mesolithis-Neolithic Transition in North West Europe (Proceedings of the British Academy)
Alasdair Whittle, Vicki Cummings | Oxford University Press, USA | 2008-01-10 | ISBN: 019726414X | 648 pages | PDF | 42,1 MB

The processes involved in the transformation of society from Mesolithic hunter-gatherers to Neolithic farmers were complex. They involved changes not only in subsistence but also in how people thought about themselves and their worlds, from their pasts to their animals. Two sets of protagonists have often been lined up in the long-running debates about these processes: on the one hand incoming farmers and on the other indigenous hunter-gatherers. Both have found advocates as the dominant force in the transitions to a new way of life. North-west Europe presents a very rich data set for this fundamental change, and recent research has both extended and deepened our knowledge of regional sequences, from the sixth to the fourth millennia cal BC. One of the most striking results is the evident diversity from northern Spain to southern Scandinavia. No one region is quite like another; hunter-gatherers and early farmers alike were also varied and the old labels of Mesolithic and Neolithic are increasingly inadequate to capture the diversity of human agency and belief.Surveys of the most recent evidence presented here also strongly suggest a diversity of transformations. Some cases of colonisation on the one hand, and indigenous adoption on the other, can still be argued but many situations now seem to involve complex fusions and mixtures. This wide-ranging set of papers by leading specialists offers a comprehensive and authoritative overview of this fundamental transition.Further keywords: archaeology, prehistory

From knoweledge to competence it is a big step - From ignorance to competence, a bigger one still Hans von Seeck
Warriors have always understood that combat is an art requiring sharp, flexible minds capable of adapting quickly to constantly shifting situations. In a survey that looks widely across history and cultures, the theories of some of the finest military thinkers and strategists unfold. The story begins with ancient Chinese tacticians, especially Sun Tzu, and then proceeds to the age of classical antiquity; to Byzantine and medieval Western thought; to Machiavelli and his time; and to the true greats like Clausewitz. We head into the modern age with a look at the 19th century, naval warfare, the two World Wars, nuclear strategy, and guerrilla insurrections.

Samurai Invasion -Japan's Korean War 1592 /1598-
Cassell | Stephen Turnbull | 2004 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0304359483 | PDF | 45 MB

After unifying Japan by force, in 1592 Hideyoshi Toyotomi (1536-98) attempted to establish an empire in East Asia. The conquest of China was his ultimate objective, but Korea had to be subdued first. Instead, it proved an insuperable obstacle to Hideyoshi's imperial fantasy. Turnbull's lively and lavishly illustrated history of the failed invasion brightly illuminates the world of late 16th-century warfare in East Asia. After reeling under the initial Japanese attacks, Korean regular and irregular forces, aided by armies from Ming China, eventually turned the Japanese back, but the invasion did not end until Hideyoshi's death in 1598. Skillfully piecing together contemporary accounts from Japanese and Korean sources, the author provides a vivid and horrifying picture of the strategy, tactics, and technology of Japanese warfare. Brutality was the norm, and hand-to-hand combat produced butchery rivaling the worst of modern wars. In Kyoto a single burial mound holds the sliced-off noses of 30,000 Korean and Chinese victims of Japanese slaughter. Absorbing and accessible, Turnbull's book will interest general readers and belongs in public as well as college libraries.
