One of the difficulties in an introductory book is to communicate a sense of purpose. Only too easily to the beginner does the book become a sequence of definitions, concepts, and results which seem little more than curiousities leading nowhere in particular. In this book I have tried to overcome this problem by making my central aim the determination of all possible groups of orders 1 to 15, together with some study of their structure. By the time this aim is realised towards the end of the book, the reader should have acquired the basic ideas and methods of group theory.

A Scientific American article on chaos, see Crutchfield et al. (1986), illus­ trates a very persuasive example of recurrence. A painting of Henri Poincare, or rather a digitized version of it, is stretched and cut to produce a mildly distorted image of Poincare. The same procedure is applied to the distorted image and the process is repeated over and over again on the successively more and more blurred images. After a dozen repetitions nothing seems to be left of the original portrait. Miraculously, structured images appear briefly as we continue to apply the distortion procedure to successive images. After 241 iterations the original picture reappears, unchanged! Apparently the pixels of the Poincare portrait were moving about in accor­ dance with a strictly deterministic rule.

Jean-Claude Forest (1930-98) è stato uno scrittore, cartoonist e sceneggiatore francese, famoso per aver creato negli anni '60 il personaggio di Barbarella, personaggio più volte ripreso in seguito (anche in questa storia fa una comparsata) e che ha avuto una trasposizione cinematografica con l'omonimo film del 1968 interpretato da Jane Fonda (alla quale andava tutto il mio apprezzamento di quindicenne) . Questa storia del 1971 (Misteriosa mattina, pomeriggio e sera) è apparsa originariamente su Pif; in Italia su Linus (da cui ho tratto gli episodi per il volume virtuale) ed è stata pubblicata da 001 Edizioni nel 2008. E' una sorta di omaggio/rivisitazione dell'Isola Misteriosa di Verne.

Early one morning in April of 1987, the Chinese mathematician J. -Q. Zhong died unexpectedly of a heart attack in New York. He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume.
