PTC launched the latest version of its flagship CAD software, Creo 12.4.1.0. The Creo 12 brings “hundreds of powerful enhancements to its design, simulation, and manufacturing capabilities,” according to PTC.
Creo 12 enhances the user interface, including adding feature presets that allow users to set their own defaults; composite structure design, including the ability to generate a solid geometry from composite layers; electrical design, including the ability to work on a harness as an assembly; model-based definition (MBD), including enhanced file export to STEP AP242; and more.

New Configuration Option to Control the Default Plotter Type
Creo Parametric 12.4.1.0
User Interface Location: N/A
Description: You can now use the new configuration option default_ms_plotter to specify the default plotter or printer to be used when the printer type is set to Windows Print Management. The value for the option should be the name of the specific plotter or printer. If a value is provided, it overrides the system’s default Windows printer setting. If left unspecified, the system will use the current Windows default printer.
Benefits: This configuration option allows you to set a default printer or plotter for Creo Parametric that is different from the one specified in the Windows Print Management. It provides this flexibility without requiring any change to the Windows printer settings.
Model-Based Definition
Material Management with Creo and Windchill
Creo Parametric 12.4.1.0
User Interface Location:.
- File > Prepare > Model Properties > Materials > Change > Material Server.
- Right click on a part or materials in the Model Tree, click Edit Materials > Material Server.
- Right click on a body in the Model Tree, click Assign Material > Other > Material Server.
Description: You can now assign Windchill managed materials directly to parts in Creo. Once assigned, the material data is used to calculate mass properties. After checking in the material information and mass properties are automatically passed to the CAD model and the associated WTPart in Windchill. This enhancement provides visibility and traceability between material usage and Bill of Materials (BOM).
The seamless integration between Windchill and Creo allows Creo users to easily select and assign materials to parts in Creo.
Benefits:
- Supports material selection early in the design process.
- Provides more visibility into material selection across products and portfolios, helping teams make informed decisions about product performance, cost, and sustainability.
