"Symphony no. 6 in E flat minor" is Prokofiev's masterpiece. Composed in 1945-1947, written as an elegy of the tragedies of World War II, it has often been regarded as the darker twin to the victorious Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major. It is a musical memorial to the dead and a statement of hope for the living… and more than that. Musically, it explores emotional depths, Prokofiev's sound world is now dark, sharp, tense, melancholy, strident.
Premiere in October 1947, Great Hall, Leningrad.
